SOUNZ Contemporary Award
Congratulations to the finalists for the 2016 SOUNZ Contemporary Award, celebrating excellence in contemporary composition:

This year, for the first time ever, we have revealed the judges for the Award. The judging panel convened by SOUNZ included an international composer representative Nicola LeFanu (UK) and New Zealanders Kate Mead, Anthony Ritchie, Marc Taddei and Sarah Watkins.

We will feature each finalist on our website and social media in the weeks leading to the APRA Silver Scrolls on 29 September. SOUNZ will be reporting from the event and you can follow the ceremony live thanks to Radio New Zealand. Read more here...

SOUNZ is calling for scores from New Zealand based composers for the SMCO Composer Project 2017.

The SMCO Composer Project is a collaboration between St Matthews Chamber Orchestra, CANZ and SOUNZ, aiming to encourage New Zealand composers at all career stages to write high quality works for non-professional orchestras.

Congratulations to...
Celeste Oram, recipient of the Kranichstein Music Prize at the Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt Summer Course.

Winning choirs at the NZCF’s The Big Sing. Kristin School’s Euphony won both the best performance of a work using Māori text and the best performance of a NZ or Pasifika composition for Tecwyn EvansWhaia te iti kahurangi.

Recipients of grants from CNZ’s latest Quick Response funding round, including some exciting music projects. Grants worth $526,349 were offered to support projects by NZ artists.

 

NZ music premieres
New Zealand String Quartet premieres a commission by Salina Fisher, Tōrino echoes on pūtōrino improvisations by Rob Thorne on tour from 17 Sept.

NZTrio, together with renowned guzheng soloist Xia Jing, premiere new works by Dorothy Ker, Dylan Lardelli, Gao Ping and Jeroen Speak on 16 Sept.

Anthony Ritchie’s Gallipoli to the Somme will be premiered by the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra on 1 Oct.

New works for bassoon and string trio by Chris Watson, James Gardner and Samuel Holloway will be performed by quasi concertino on 9 Oct.

Jade at the Pah presents a new work by Leonie Holmes on 9 Oct.

The Adam Chamber Music Festival 2017 programme has been launched, including premieres of works by Gao Ping, Tabea Squire, Helen Fisher, Gillian Whitehead, Natalie Hunt, Gareth Farr and Edward Ware.
