PNA HIGHLIGHTS & HAPPENINGS
Our Spring Events & Programs Catalog is now available! If you live in PhinneyWood, or are a PNA member, it should hit your mailbox soon. Or, grab a copy at the Phinney Center, the Greenwood Senior Center, or a local library (Greenwood, Ballard, Broadview, and Green Lake). Don't get attached to the short catalog format though: The Review quarterly newspaper will be back in full form this summer!
We're excited to announce that our friend and longtime PNA Beer Taste participant Reuben's Brews will support the Hot Meal Program with their March "Thank You Thursday" campaign! Reuben's is donating $1 per crowler (32 oz. can) sold to the Hot Meal Program and they'll have a collection bin for items that Hot Meal Program diners need. Check out our featured events list for opportunities to connect with us at the
brewery on 3/10 and 3/24, too. The Reuben's "Thank You Thursday" program supports local nonprofits as part of their Reuben's Brews Foundation, which is, "guided by the belief that pouring delight for our community can extend beyond what’s poured in a glass..."
The Greenwood Senior Center seeks two facilitators to lead Finding Meaning and Hope, a ten week discussion series that explores what it means to be a dementia family caregiver, provides support to caregivers, and shares tools that caregivers can use to find meaning amidst the ambiguity of dementia and hope for what life can be. Whether you are a healthcare or social services professional, a community leader, or a caregiver ready to support others, the Meaning & Hope Institute will give you the training and guidance needed to facilitate the discussions. Facilitators will be paid for the training
and ten week series.
Grow it Forward is a group of local gardeners who grow native tree and shrub seedlings for habitat restoration projects. They are seeking volunteer pickup truck owners/drivers to deliver soil, pots, and native tree seedlings to local gardeners who will tend them for 2 years in micro-nurseries and then give them to conservation groups to help restore critical forests. It's never too early to celebrate Earth Day!
"As-built" is an architectural term, meaning “documenting as-is conditions of a space.” According to architect Alev Seymen, understanding the as-built conditions of a space is fundamental to the success of the new design. Alev applies this thinking in their local design practice, AS-Built Studio. “My goal through my practice is to enrich the lives of my clients and build upon the many layers of beauty in our neighborhoods.”
More than 200 attendees enjoyed our Book Exchange on Sat, Feb 19, swapping and buying hundreds of books from five genres. The crowd donated a big bin full of socks and hand warmers to our Hot Meal Program diners and together we gave sixteen boxes of books to Books to Prisoners, a nonprofit that helps, "foster a love of reading behind bars, encourage the pursuit of knowledge and self-empowerment, and break the cycle of recidivism." Thank you to everyone who enjoyed and supported the event. See you at our next Book Exchange on Sept. 24!
Did you know that in the early days of Hollywood there was an entirely different film industry in America? Labeled “race movies,” over 500 films were produced in a 40 year period. Join us to watch a beautiful restoration of Within Our Gates, a seminal work from this era's most prolific filmmaker, Oscar Micheaux. Scarecrow Video Executive Director Kate Barr will lead a pre-screening presentation on the history of the film and African American filmmaking, as well as a post-event discussion. You don't need to RSVP for this free screening, so
please bring friends!
Treat yourself to an unforgettable evening of local wines with friends! Each ticket includes ten tastes from Washington wineries like Avennia and Treveri Cellars, delicious appetizers, and music by Tim Scallon. Find bottles of your favorite tastes at our event wine store, which will stock local wines that may be rare in Seattle. You can volunteer to help out at the Wine Taste, too!
Join PNA staff at Reuben's Brews to learn more about our Hot Meal Program and our upcoming events. Reuben's will donate $1 per crowler sold, and there will be a Hot Meal Program donation bin where you can give dental care, personal hygiene, and first aid supplies.
This kids' gear sale is your opportunity to snag some fantastic deals, and/or unload all that gear piling up in your closets while making a little money for yourself and supporting the Phinney Neighborhood Preschool Co-op. It's sure to offer amazing deals on quality gently used clothes, shoes, toys, and gear–including pack and plays, cribs, car seats, strollers, and much more!
Say hello to PNA staff and friends while enjoying a pint to support our Hot Meal Program at Reuben's Brews. Reuben's will donate $1 per pint, $1 per set of 3 tasters, and $1 per crowler sold during the evening. Please bring hygiene, dental, and first aid supplies for Hot Meal Program diners!
Can you provide first aid in emergencies? Learn infant, child, and adult CPR, HIV and bloodborne pathogens, and first aid, all with a focus on injury prevention and safety. This class meets COVID-19 safety requirements (hands-on only, no mouth-to mouth) and L/I WISHA-WAC safety standards. Certificates will be issued at the end.
Holi is a Hindu festival that celebrates spring, connection, and the triumph of good over evil. Join this traditional celebration and throw colorful powder and enjoy local vendors and entertainers. Capacity for the color throwing portion of the event is limited through timed tickets, which cost $10 and include 5 color packets. Folks from all religions, cultures, backgrounds, and ages are welcome. Volunteer to help make the festivities happen!
