With over half of our team new to time cricket, many playing only a handful of 50 over games, this marathon loomed as a steep learning curve against a more experienced Whanganui Collegiate outfit. The group, losing seven players from last season and another two through injury have been improving steadily and produced some excellent cricket over the weekend. Batting first, the home side made early inroads on a green pitch. Sam Jonas provided obdurate resistance but Collegiate used the conditions to leave us teetering at 25 for 5. Jack Sorrell stepped up in the crisis, scoring a career best 89, ably supported by Willie Matthews, Charlie Matthews and James Wilkinson, taking us to a competitive total of 177. In reply Collegiate posted 189 a slender lead, which could and should have been much bigger, but for a wonderful fightback. Captain Jesse McIntyre leading from the front, taking four wickets, backed up by brilliant all-round fielding Rathkeale took the last five wickets for only 12 runs. Our second innings of 308 for 7 declared set up the game and was studded with some lovely cameo performances, Jesse McIntyre, Andrew Taylor, Jack Sorrell, Willie Matthews, and Charlie Matthews all contributed well, however Jake Jonas produced the best innings ever constructed in a fixture between our two Colleges, 164, from 210 balls, including 17 fours. Setting Collegiate a challenging 298 to win, Will Summerfield made early inroads picking up two early wickets. More good fielding and consistent bowling created pressure as the home side looked to keep a high scoring rate needed to chase down our impregnable lead. Wickets from Jake Jonas and Jesse McIntyre just prior to tea left their chase in tatters and with no option Whanganui elected to try and salvage a draw. With mounting pressure, fielders around the bat, the excitement drew to a crescendo. An impressive century from Shaun O’Leary held the home side together and helped them cling onto a draw 8 wickets down at the close. The whole side contributed to a fantastic performance over the three days, which included moments of brilliance in the field. To play such good cricket for three days is an achievement in itself and the draw was enough to retain the Didsbury Tatham Cup. Jake Jonas made history with the highest ever score in the fixture’s history (164) Upcoming SportTouch Commences Tuesday 9th Feb – Training on The Close 3.25 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays Tennis Commences in Week 3 – Check Notice Boards for Training Times Gym Commencing week 3 – Check Notices for more information Athletics Up and running Tuesday and Thursday after school Mountain Biking Meeting 3.10 on Tuesday 9th Feb Mr Macri’s Classroom MUST ATTEND!
