mission and ministry encouragers

Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) was a German pastor and theologian who had a striking journey and public witness against the Nazi regime.
Thursday 9th April 2015 is the 70th anniversary of his martyrdom.  A series of events have been planned in Adelaide.

How is Dietrich Bonhoeffer engaging with us today?

What would Bonhoeffer seek of lay workers today?

A Lutheran who paid the ultimate price for serving his community!

You may like to make some mention of him in your prayers, devotions or other activities you are involved in your local church, fellowship or community.

I’m sure Dietrich would have liked the following thoughts:
If God brings you to it,
He will bring you through it.
Happy moments, praise God
Difficult moments, seek God
Quiet moments, worship God
Painful moments, trust God
Every moment, thank God

Erika Mills.....Lay Ministry's organiser & heart!

I have been involved in Lay Ministry for 13 years, for 7 of those years alongside my husband Dean who served as Children, Youth and Family Ministry Coordinator for St Marks, Mt Gravatt and then as Director for Small Group Ministry in St Martins, Mt Gambier.+ I was a full time mum at the time and loved being able to help with all the background organisational and administrative tasks.  We first met James Doecke the first Director for Lay Ministry on one of his visits to Brisbane and really appreciated the support and encouragement he offered to us.  It made us feel that we were not alone and part of a bigger team, Lay Ministry.
It was when we moved to Adelaide, so Dean could begin his Pastoral Ministry study at ALC in 2008 that I started in the role as Assistant to the Director.  Wow…where has that time gone?  In the beginning there was just the two of us, and now we are a team of four, Nevin, Verena, Glenn and myself.  Glenn and Verena began their roles as the Board’s most planned and anticipated Lay Worker Formation Officers in January 2012 and Nevin last year in June.
Lay Ministry is alive and as such change is inevitable therefore there is always something to do and prepare for…never a dull moment!  A large part of my role is ensuring Nevin, Verena and Glenn are able to serve you and not be caught up with all the boring organisational and administrative tasks…which I know they are happy not to do either!  God has given me the gift of administration, making even the most official document look good is what I do.
Being the first point of contact allows me the opportunity to talk, guide and equip you with all the necessary information that enables you to serve where God has placed you.  Having the opportunity to meet some of you at Lay Workers Conferences has been a highlight as well…to have a face to a name is such a joy!  For me as being the Administrator for lay ministry is not just a job but a ministry!
My prayer is for all of you who serve within Ministry, in whatever capacity, whether Lay Worker, Pastor or Volunteer, we serve together within a team that is accepting and loving.  We can come together and talk not only about the work that needs to be done but also how our walk with God has been going, what is going on in our lives whether good or bad and PRAYING for one another.  We are all equal and serve on the same team with Christ at the head!  This is what I enjoy most about serving within the Lay Ministry team.
“For in fact the body is not one member but many.”  1 Corinthians 12:14 (NKJV)

Darren Linke....Tandara Camp Director

My wife Kerry and I have been at Tandara for 4 years. When I accepted the position as Manager it was both daunting and one of enormous responsibility. The decision to leave our stable jobs as bricklayer and nursing in Benalla Victoria, and move our whole family to Tandara Lutheran Camp at Halls Gap, Vic was a huge one.
Feeling God’s calling and being obedient has been challenging and often frustrating. With any new job there is always struggles.

Some of them are:

  • Getting used to a new job, a new environment and new people (staff and committee members).
  • Settling the children into a new school and having them feeling happy and comfortable and developing new friendships.
  • As a family, we expected finding activities in a new community would be a struggle but due to  floods in Halls Gap earlier that year and having community meetings and BBQ’s we settled in quickly.
  • As a couple we had to get used to working more closely together in ministry which was new and challenging to us.
  • My main struggle was and probably still is, finding a healthy balance between work, family, social time and also being involved in regular weekly worship with a Lutheran Church. Work hours require us to be present in Halls Gap most Sundays.
  • As a bricklayer I could see progress quickly in the work I was doing but now it sometimes takes much longer to see an outcome.
  • I think my biggest struggle and challenge was my bike accident early in 2013. To hand the running of the camp to Kerry and other volunteers and trust that they were able to cope while I was recovering with rehab was a time when I really needed to hand it over to God to guide and sustain them through the process.

However there’s been many positive times which far outweighed the struggles. Some of these are:

  • Being able to experience and live in the beauty of Halls Gap and the Tandara setting.
  • The encouragement we receive from campers and all who volunteer their time to Tandara.
  • The enthusiasm of volunteers and supporters of our ministry at Tandara definitely shines when we have our annual Work Camp. Although this is a time when many odd jobs get done it’s also a time of much fun and fellowship.
  • As a family our faith journey has grown considerably through the groups & people who visit the camp and include us in their ministry.
  • Probably the most significant “God” moment was in 2014 when we saw the introduction of our first Intern program. This had been in the planning for some time and after much prayer we were able to welcome three female interns. This year we have two male interns.

Overall the camping ministry here at Tandara is one which I love and certainly brings a new dimension to every new day. To be able to see God working with and through the people who come here as well as the staff and my family is amazing. God has certainly got huge plans for this place and I can’t wait to see where and how God will work next.  We have also been blessed with the new additions of James and Judi Doecke who have joined our team at the commencement of 2015.
God continues to pour out his blessings here at Tandara.
