Farewell from the Outoging National AJET Chair
Hello Everyone!
I hope your new fiscal year has begun well! With the new requirements for elementary school English to be implemented by 2020, my workload has been much higher as my village makes an intermediary increase in their English curriculum. It’s been a lot of fun though working with the younger kids and I’m excited to see their English skills grow! It’s due to these changes that I did not seek re-election and thus, will be finishing my term at the end of May.
Over the last year as Chair, I have learned quite a lot. The most enjoyable part was working with the great people at CLAIR, the JET community as a whole, and, above all, my amazing team. Thanks to the hard work of the everyone at National AJET, all of our goals for the year were met. We’ve established resources to ensure AJET can afford to supply our various services and nearly 25% of all JET program participants completed our two surveys. Feel free to check the reports we wrote based on your feedback here.
Working on National AJET taught me many things. The largest lesson I learned was that building community takes work. A lot of it, sourced from a lot of people. The Block reps, local AJET chapters, and PA`s really did a lot to help us reach our goals and I would like to thank them all for that. Rising 2nd year JETs, be sure to step up and be the best senpai you can be!
For those of you who do not already know, my successor is Rachel Boellstorff. Rachel has been the Vice-Chair of National AJET for the last year and I am very thankful for the opportunity to work with her. She was a great person to work with and I am confident AJET will do well under her leadership.
If you ever find yourself in the North of Okinawa be sure to keep an eye out for the tall blonde guy snorkeling. It`ll probably be me.
お疲れ様です!

Volunteer in your Community on Behalf of AJET
For those looking to get involved with their local community, why not consider volunteering? As participants of the JET Programme, we are in a unique position to give something back to Japan and to truly impact the local areas in which we live. Spending time working with others towards a greater, collective societal or environmental goal is an immensely satisfying and rewarding experience that can provide a huge sense of accomplishment, as well as personal and professional benefits.
No matter where you are placed in Japan, your first port of call should be the National AJET volunteering database. To keep up to date with volunteer events and goings on, join our Facebook page! Plus, if you’re looking for volunteers for your own project or are aware of a volunteering opportunity or similar event anywhere in Japan, email the Director at jessie.zhou@ajet.net to spread the word.
