Hub closer to completion with opening of new-look community hall

A refurbished community hall is the first stage to be delivered of the Dampier Community Hub project which inches closer to completion.

The 50-year old hall has undergone a series of repair and improvement works to bring it in line with newly constructed elements of the $18 million Dampier Community Hub facility.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said it was great to see the community embracing the rejuvenated space and looked forward to the whole facility being opened and available for community use early next year.

“We knew the community was keen to start using the hall again as soon as possible so we have been able to structure the project so that these works could be delivered first and the space re-opened for bookings,” Cr Long said.

“It’s great to see user groups making the most of the revamped space. Terre Rouge Dance School held its mid-year production in the hall recently and there are already a number of bookings scheduled for the remainder of the year.”

The Dampier Community Hub Project is funded by Rio Tinto, the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program, Lotterywest and the City of Karratha.

Rio Tinto general manager Dampier Ports Jessica Farrell said it was great to see the Dampier Hub project tracking so well.

“As a Dampier resident, I am so excited to see the hall reopen and the activities buzzing again,” said Ms Farrell.

“The hall has always been such an important community facility and now after its wonderful makeover will provide an even better facility for our many community groups and local organisations”

Pilbara Development Commission Acting Chief Executive Officer Terry Hill said the project would significantly improve community amenity for the town.

“The Pilbara Development Commission is really pleased to have supported funding for this innovative project which will enhance the liveability and vibrancy of the Dampier community.

"The facilities at the Dampier Community Hub are first-class and the project is a prime example of the Pilbara Development Commission’s commitment to enriching the Pilbara community.”

The Dampier Community Hub is on budget and on track to be completed early in 2016.
