MATARIKI IS

To celebrate Matariki, Museum of Wellington City & Sea and Chamber Music New Zealand
join forces to bring to life the story of Ranginui (the sky father) and Papatūānuku (the earth mother).
Te Ao Mārama is a musical journey with local chamber musicians, taonga pūoro (traditional Māori instruments), classical instruments and contemporary New Zealand musicians.

| BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND - STROMA |
|
Bridging three millennia of music, Stroma’s own string quartet teams up again with early music specialists Kamala Bain (recorder) and Rowena Simpson (soprano).
The Mirror of Time 3 consists of works by New Zealand composers interleaved with arrangements of Medieval and Renaissance music in concerts in Auckland and Wellington.

| QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY HONOURS |
|
Two of New Zealand’s notable musicians were honoured in this year's Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Professor Donald Maurice
became a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM), for services to music. His latest recording Home is Where...
is available on the SOUNZ website.
Philip Garland
was awarded The Queen’s Service Medal (QSM) for services to folk music. Some of his recordings can be found on the SOUNZ website.
SOUNZ would like to congratulate both for their achievements.

| JACK BODY TRIBUTE CONCERT |
|
A concert celebrating the 70th year of much loved New Zealand composer Jack Body, was held at the Music Theatre, University of Auckland, on 30 April. Works by Body and his fellow NZ composers were performed along with spoken tributes from his friends
Gillian Whitehead, Helen Bowater
and Lyell Cresswell. Jack Body was also awarded an Honorary Membership by the Composers Association of New Zealand.

A Hidden Treasure
One of Jack Body’s earlier works, Suara – Environmental Music from Java, is available for purchase at the SOUNZ website along with other resources.

THE BIG SING (New Zealand Choral Federation Secondary Schools Choir Festivals) regional competitions are taking place around the country, and will culminate in the National Finale in Auckland 21- 23 August.
In celebration of choir music, SOUNZ has a new resource available: Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir's new album, Voice of the Soul. You can purchase it from SOUNZ.

NZCT Chamber Music Contest is happening around the country. This is a great opportunity to see young secondary school musicians and composers perform nationwide. SOUNZ is proud to present the prize for the Best Performance of a New Zealand work in each district.

SMP Ensemble presents Engine House
on Friday 20 June, 7pm, Adam Concert Room, Victoria University of Wellington.
SMP Ensemble will present a selection of works by composers associated with The University of Sheffield and the UK based ensemble Sounds of the Engine House. This evening of contemporary chamber music, electroacoustic music and experimental performances will also include performances of graphic scores from
Strange Terrain, the recent collection published by
Waiteata Music Press, available from SOUNZ.

Manukau Symphony Orchestra presents Country Idylls
on Saturday 28 June, 7.30pm, Genesis Energy Theatre, Manukau City. Included in the programme is NZ Composer Kenneth Young’s
Douce Tristesse (Sweet Sadness), which was commissioned by Peter van Drimmelen and the Wellington Chamber Orchestra in 2012.
