Annals of Family Medicine Appoints
José E Rodríguez, MD, FAAFP as New Associate Editor
LEAWOOD, Kan. — José E Rodríguez, a family physician in Salt Lake City and associate vice president for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at University of Utah Health, has been appointed associate editor of the Annals of Family Medicine, a bimonthly, peer-reviewed clinical research journal for primary care. As associate editor, Rodríguez will help lead the Annals in its mission to better understand and improve health and primary care.
“Dr. Rodríguez’s background in the areas of equity, diversity and inclusion—with a special interest in underrepresented minority faculty in academic medicine—make him the ideal candidate for this role,” said Carolyn Richardson, MD, editor-in-chief of the Annals. “His expertise will help further guide the journal as it continues to fulfill its commitment to confront systemic racism and eliminate health disparities in primary care and primary care research.” Read more...
Mitigating Implicit Bias Training
UAFP, with a grant from the AAFP Center for Diversity and Health Equity, is offering this course for family medicine physicians and other primary care providers seeking to better understand the impact of unconscious bias and how to reduce negative effects of implicit/unconscious bias on patients.

UAFP Student & Resident Poster Session
UAFP plans to return to an in-person format for our 2nd annual Student & Resident Poster Session on Friday, September 17, 2021 at the University of Utah Alumni House.
UAFP invites students, residents, and fellows, to submit an abstract in research, clinical quality project, or theoretical/conceptual format. Cash prizes will be awarded. Abstracts are due no later than Saturday, July 31. Learn more at utahafp.org/postersession2021
Congratulations to Graduating Physicians!
The University of Utah School of Medicine was able to return to an in-person commencement this year and held its ceremony this morning at the John M. Huntsman Center. Rocky Vista University - Southern Utah, celebrated its first graduating class this year with a hybrid event last Saturday, May 15th. UAFP sends heartfelt congratulations to all the graduates of these fine Utah institutions and to their faculty members and preceptors for continuing to foster the future of medicine during a global pandemic!
Special Congrats to Our Student Award Winners
For several years, UAFP has been recognizing an outstanding graduating medical student from the University of
Utah who has matched into family medicine, with the F. Marion Bishop Award. This year, Michael Bishop was chosen as the winner. Michael will be starting his residency with Utah Valley Family Medicine in Provo, Utah this summer. We were thrilled to be able to recognize another outstanding senior matching into family medicine from the first graduating class from Rocky Vista University – Southern Utah. This award was given to Stella Chan who has matched at Shasta Community Health Center Family Medicine Residency in Redding, California. Both of these outstanding future family medicine physicians have shown evidence of active student leadership in Family Medicine activities and demonstrated evidence of superior scholastic achievement in their medical school studies, particularly in the field of Family Medicine. UMA House of Delegates will be in-person again this year, September 10 & 11 at the Zermatt Resort in Midway, UT.
