Help Researchers Study a Buddy-Based Diet and Exercise Program, and Receive a Free Fitbit

Purpose of this Study:

Studies have found that cancer survivors who have obesity have a higher risk of having their cancer come back.  In the DUET (Daughters, Dudes, Mothers, and Others) study, researchers will explore whether a web-based weight loss and exercise program results in weight loss and improved overall health and quality of life. Researchers are looking to enroll survivors of colorectal, kidney, prostate, ovarian, uterine, multiple myeloma, or female breast cancer along with a friend or relative (buddy) who live in Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, or Tennessee. The study can be completed from your own home (no need to travel).

You and your partner will be randomly assigned (like the flip of a coin) to one of two groups, the exercise and weight loss program or a group that receives the intervention after a 6-month wait.

This Study Involves:

If assigned to the exercise and weight loss group, you will:

  • Receive a free Fitbit and Wi-Fi Scale

  • Receive a diet and exercise program delivered online and via text.

  • Be asked to complete three two-part internet-based surveys (30-45 minutes each) over 6 months

  • Be asked to complete two online body measurements and physical activity assessments, as well as two community health center visits OR home visits

If assigned to the delayed intervention group, you will receive the program after a 6-month wait.

Recruiting For:

  • Cancer survivors interested in losing weight and signing up with a chosen buddy who is also interested in weight loss (daughters, mothers, and others, including spouses, neighbors, friends, etc.) but does not have to be a cancer survivor. The enrolling cancer survivor must have completed treatment for one of the following cancers: colorectal, kidney, prostate ovarian, uterine, multiple myeloma, or female breast cancer.

Please note that only one pair member needs to sign up. Once your eligibility is confirmed, then you can take time to find a partner.
