Ngā mihi, na, Pania and the team at NZ Māori Tourism Kei te mōhio rānei koe? (Did you know?) The 2017 Commercial Advisors Scheme application round is now underway. The scheme funds Māori collectives up to $60,000 to work with a Commercial Advisor for up to 18 months. The advisors offer professional business advice and mentoring as they work with collectives on business development projects aimed at realising the potential commercial value of the collective’s assets. The scheme is open to collectives at a range of stages of commercial development, from initial options analyses and feasibility studies, through to business case development, strategic planning, or market analysis and expansion. It also supports collectives with assets from a wide range of primary and other sectors. The Commercial Advisors Scheme is open to Māori collectives, including trusts, incorporations, post-settlement governance entities and similar organisations. Coalitions of collectives may also apply. Applications close 11 September. Te nama o te wiki (Number of the week) Guest nights were up 7.3 percent in May 2017 compared with May 2016, with increases in all the regions, Stats NZ said last week. The biggest rises were in Canterbury, Bay of Plenty, Auckland, and Northland. Tai Poutini Māori Tourism plan gets funding boostMāori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell has announced a $70,000 investment in Tai Poutini Māori Tourism. Mr Flavell says the investment supports the preparation and implementation of the Tai Poutini (West Coast) Māori Tourism Strategy and Action Plan to guide iwi investment in the region. Māori Economy Investor Guide Economic Development Minister Simon Bridges has launched a new guide for potential investors highlighting opportunities in the Māori economy. “The Māori Economy Investor Guide will help investors understand the Māori economy, culture and people. It offers insights as to how and where potential investors can engage with Māori enterprises, embrace the distinctive global advantages of the Māori economy, and forge strong partnerships for the future.” Produced by KPMG, the Māori Economy Investor Guide was funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment as part of their commitment to He kai kei aku ringa – the Crown-Māori Economic Growth Partnership. Two waka representatives participate in the Annual Tribal Canoe Journeys Noel Woods and Tuparahuia Pita have been selected as Leaders to
represent Toi Maori at the Tribal Canoe Journeys 2017 in British Columbia, Canada with the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde. Noel and Tuparahuia are both Kaihautu of waka from Te Whanganui a Tara, Wellington district and are dedicated to kaupapa waka activities within their own communities. They also have a number of other skills and talents that they will be able to share with their hosts and other tribes while on the journey.
