September 2020Anti-Racism: A Student Plan of ActionThe SSCCC held two town halls to discuss racial barriers students of color face on California community colleges. During these two town halls, students shared their stories and experiences, as well as provided ideas and suggestions about how the cultural climate on California community colleges needed to change. The result was an Anti-racism; A Student Action Plan. A draft plan was shared and passed by the SSCCC Delegates present at the September 4, 2020, SSCCC Delegate Assembly Special meeting. The action plan will be shared with the California community college system partners as the SSCCC representatives participate in conversations about creating change in the system. We hope that you will share the action plan with adminis-trators, faculty, and classified professionals on your campus and participate in governance groups to influence change. Professional Development and TrainingThe SSCCC will be holding a week-long free professional development and leadership training event. The training will cover such areas as diversity, equity, and inclusion work, transfer and student basic needs issues, and local interests such as the Ralph M. Brown Act and running a meeting. The preliminary program for the event is available on the SSCCC here. Registration is now open! Click here to register. Legislative Prioritiesby VPLA Nickens The SSCCC recently published our 2020-2021 legislative priorities. Our legislative priorities are developed annually based on past and newly adopted resolutions passed by the Delegate Assembly. These priorities also reflect the recent and unique struggles our students are facing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ultimately, this document establishes SSCCC’s policy and legislative agenda for the next year. It includes previous legislative priorities such as DACA students and basic needs, but also adds new priorities to address other critical issues such as COVID-19 relief, unemployment assistance, technology access, and more. SSCCC Fun FactsDid you know that in 1986, the California Student Association for Community Colleges (CalSACC) was formed as the discussions for AB 1725 were beginning? AB1725 (Chapter 973, Statues of 1988) was the landmark legislation that formalized the governance structure for community colleges by establishing the California Community Colleges as a system, by delineating the roles of the Board of Governors and district governing boards, and by strengthening the roles of faculty, staff, and students in governance.
