A Christmas message from Mayor Karen Williams

During this extraordinary year, Redland Libraries and their wonderful customers have shown themselves to be amazingly resilient and, as you might expect from such a resourceful group, willing to try new ways of doing things.

Closures in March due to COVID-19 were met by a fierce determination from our library staff to continue providing services with online First 5 Forever Story Times, Author Talks and children’s activities. Our digital library came into its own, providing free lockdown entertainment via ebooks, magazines, audiobooks, movies and more. Thank you for your patience during closures, and your willingness to engage with us via these alternative channels.

An easing of restrictions saw our libraries reopen in May and further easing means in-person events are now back on. Restrictions are still in place to keep customers and staff safe and I thank you, again, for recognising the importance of signing in, hand sanitising and social distancing. Your kindness to your fellow library lovers, and patience with our staff as they manage the COVID-safe systems, is appreciated.

Christmas this year, for many around the world, will be very different. On Redlands Coast, we are comparatively fortunate in that we will be able to safely celebrate in a way not too different to ‘usual’. Be that as it may, it is still important to remain vigilant and stay safe during the festive season.

I wish you and your families a wonderful Christmas where you find time to continue showing kindness, reconnect, and appreciate the wonderful place in which we live.

Cr Karen Williams, Mayor of Redland City
