MEDICAL ADVISORY: Acute Flaccid Paralysis Issued by: Gayane Hovhannisyan, MD, MPH, PhD, FRCPC, Acting Associate Medical Officer of Health Background & Current Epidemiology- As of Oct. 25, 2018, Public Health Ontario (PHO) reports there have been nine children under investigation for acute flaccid paralysis (AFP). Two of the nine children tested positive for EV-D68. The cause of the cases are unknown.

Clinical Presentation - AFP is a clinical syndrome marked by the acute onset of focal weakness or paralysis, characterized as flaccid, without other obvious causes. (e.g., trauma) It may be the result of infectious (most commonly viral) or non-infectious agents.
Testing Recommendations and ResourcesReporting - AFP is a reportable disease of public health significance in Ontario for children less than 15 years of age
