Social Notes from Vice Commodore Dan...

Summer is here and in full swing and we are headed deep in to July!

Coming up this Saturday, July 19th is our second Island Time/ Delta Time Celebration hosted by our brave new member Allison Cooper.  Thank you Allison for taking this on!  And thank you in advance Sequoia for supporting her efforts!

For this party Kathy has hired the Mission Varrio Project Band with their Latin Rock sound.

The menu for the evening is:

  • Beef and Veggie Fajitas
  • Black Beans Fiesta
  • Baja Rice
  • Latin Slaw
  • Cupcakes and Fruit
  • Cost is $ 20.00.

In looking over the calendar, and reviewing staff levels, I have decided to cancel the second DID in July (that of 7/25). I apologize if this requires you to change plans.

Speaking of the Delta (which we weren’t), I saw a note from Rear Commodore Rick Gilmore that I want to repeat and enthusiastically second.  And that is the concept of buddy boating up the river.  It is a great way to make the journey without the white knuckle, downwind, edge of jibe, which-way-do-I-go moments that build enduring memories.  If you do not have a buddy, look on the list of registrants and find one.  If you cannot find one, come to the club with a paper chart and go over the route with somebody with the experience.  (With the experience to mention never to go into Martinez  Marina, for instance!).  And, please watch the tides.  If you are at the Carquinez Bridge at slack to early flood, you can have a 2 knot push.  That makes the trip a lot faster.

Second to lastly, Joanne mentioned the Sequoia received a check for $600 from the Redwood City Celebration Association for our first place winning float!  Wow.

So the float prize leads me back to the Fourth of July and our volunteers.  I have also checked our volunteer drink board and noted a lack of weekend volunteers coming forward to claim their beverages.  Come on now, do your duty!

Thank you again.  I hope you are enjoying your Summer.

Delta Time Fiesta!

Hello members!

It's worth repeating: This Saturday, July 19th is our Delta time party!

I am so happy that Allison Cooper is hosting this auspicious event. Come dance to the Latin beat of a fantastic band and enjoy  South-of-the-border cuisine that you will not want to miss.

It allt starts at 6pm and the band plays from 7-10pm. Come hungry because we'll have munchies to get us ready for the main course.

Please let Allison know if you can attend (Click Here). It would also be great if you could help out in any way — please let Allison know if you are available to help with bartending or the galley.

Yay us! (as Rick Gilmore would say)

New Members' Corner

Now that you're a member of SYC you have ONE responsibility you absolutely MUST do in order to remain a "member in good standing" (well, in addition to paying your bills).

"It shall be the obligation of every Corinthian, Senior, Sustaining, and Life member to serve as Officer of the Day at the Club in rotation with other members of the Club no more often than one weekend day a year." - Club Bylaws

OK. So how does this happen and what does it mean to you?

It's acutally a great opportunity for you to learn a lot about your club, enjoy a relaxing day chatting with whomever walks in, introducing your great club to visitors, and - if you're lucky - doing all this during some wonderful club event!

SYC cycles through the club roster in (mostly) alphabetical order, assigning members to specific weekend days as OD's. Since there are only about 100 weekend, non-holiday days but over 200 memebers, you can expect to draw your day about every 2 years. You can find your specific day in the calendar on the club website (http://www.sequoiayc.org/events) and it will be published in the Blast two weeks ahead of time.

You'll find all the helps and guidelines for the Officer of the Day in the OD Notebook - stored in the cabinet above the right side of the bar. But here's a few things to know ahead of time:

  • Your OD day begins at 10:00 and ends at 17:00 hours.
  • You'll hoist the flag and make coffee.
  • There's WiFi if you want to use it.
  • You probably should bring a lunch - or better - have your friends join you for a great day on the deck or in the lounge and get them to bring lunch!
  • Make sure the flag is lowered and the club is locked up tight before you leave.

And if you're not swapping stories with other members you can check out the bookcase, explore the galley and bar, or just have a quiet beer and enjoy the view. It doesn't get better than that!
