Key Messages Week 5 - Term 3BOOK WEEK @ JPC This week JPC, along with schools around Australia, have been celebrating Book Week! The theme for this year is ‘Reading is my secret power’ and the JPC English Faculty put on some exciting activities to encourage the love of books! On Monday, Harry Potter lovers united for a trivia in which only the most loyal fans could prevail. Tuesday brought together those who have a flair for the dramatic. Students brought along a book they are currently reading to perform a chapter in the theatre. On Wednesday it was “crafternoon” – creating bookmarks and 10-word short stories. Congratulations to Ary White and Tia Morris for their winning stories! The inaugural book club began at lunch time on Thursday for those bookworms who just wanted to keep reading! (this will continue in the weeks ahead). For our final day of book week, the JPC staff dressed to impress in some classic book characters. Who do you think won best dressed? Thank you to all the staff and students who supported Book Week 2019! Miss Teena Zorzi Assessment Calendar Assessment Calendars are now available for each year level on the JPC Website and through Moodle under Parent Information/Assessment Calendar. These calendars summarise key assessment dates for students. As our first trial, there may be some elective dates missing and some dates may indicate a week. Please note that there may be changes to the information as specific due dates are set or for other reasons negotiated with the students. Students will be informed of specific dates when the tasks are handed out. A reminder that assessment tasks are also available in Moodle under the relevant subject. If you have any feedback with regards to the Assessment Calendar, email either myself or the college office. Regards, Dr Ann Cleary
Headspace Wellbeing WorkshopDo you think you (or your child) would benefit from attending a practical skills session, run by a qualified Headspace professional, to learn about stress and anxiety management? Students will discover strategies to manage stress and school workload, manage mental health concerns and will look into strategies for dealing with anxiety. Headspace is all about fostering environments where you feel free and comfortable to be yourself. You will be able to learn about mental health challenges and ways to maintain a healthy headspace. These sessions will be broken up into a junior and a senior session. The Junior sessions are catered towards our year 7, 8 and 9 students, while our senior sessions are aimed at our students in years 10, 11 and 12. These sessions will be running during ILT on Thursday of week 7 period 1 for our junior session and period 2 for our senior session. You will need to enter the excursion room into your planner and write that you are attending the Wellbeing Workshop. The room is to be confirmed. Spaces are limited so it will be first in best dressed! To register for this event, you will need to express your interest to your PC teacher, who will record your name in their pastoral folder. Once the maximum numbers have been reached, the sign-up sheet will be removed from the folder. Fleur Greaney Survey - How does your child travel to school? Following on from last week's Wellbeing message about the car park and bus bay at the end of the school day, we ask if you could please complete a quick survey (see link below) about how your child/children travel to/from school. The survey will only take 2 minutes of your time. Many thanks for your cooperation. Paul McKie In and Around the School Science Week @ JPCLast week at JPC we celebrated National Science Week, 2019. Science Week is a celebration of science and technology that takes place across the country during August with the aim of promoting interest and engagement in Science. The theme for Science Week this year was ‘Destination Moon: More Missions, More Science’ and at JPC we took inspiration from this by learning to live on another planet and building all the tools we would need if we were going to live elsewhere in our solar system. At lunchtime our intrepid, potential spacefarers watched ‘The Martian,’ built greenhouses, constructed water filters and made (and fired) bottle rockets. In our fantastic mini-greenhouses, we planted the seeds that would eventually become our food on the Moon (as well as providing us with a supply of Oxygen!). We made DIY water filters that cleaned dirty water. Finally, we capped off the week making awesome bottle rockets that couldn’t quite get us to the Moon. This was a fantastic week of science fun and I thank all the students who came along and enjoyed the activities. A big thank you also goes out to our amazing science staff who ran the lunchtime sessions, making them a huge hit! Rohan Duddy HospitalityHospitality students hosted a Japanese inspired lunch at JPC Restaurant 1021, Wednesday 22nd August. Although the restaurant was by no means full, the students were kept busy making and serving mocktails, Tempura prawns asparagus and and Matcha Pannacotta to the guests. Thank you to the many teachers who attended, the students are always very encouraged by this and proud to showcase their abilities. We would like to encourage families to attend the night restaurant in week 7, on Wednesday 4th September, from 5.30pm after the musical showcase. This evening will be organized solely by our year 12 hospitality students as an assessment piece and will feature a delightful fresh Spring menu. Hope to see you there! Annie Daley Congratulations School Sport Australia Congratulations to Alex Watt who has been selected to officiate at the School Sport Australia 12 and Under Football Championship at the end of this month. Well done on your role Alex, we look forward to hearing how it all goes! Sport ASC Girls Hockey Carnival Last Friday, we attended the ASC Girls Hockey Carnival. JPC was not able to register a team due to low numbers so we joined with Daramalan College. We came out on top, winning 3/6 of the match rounds and winning the grand final with a score of 2-1. Overall, we felt welcome, made new friends and had a fabulous day. We would like to thank Miss Ferguson for looking after us for the day, as well as Miss Turner for being her legendary self and organising for us to attend this event. Liliana Beckett and Tilda Salisbury, Year 8 NSWCCC Netball Carnival This week, 20 students, 2 staff members, and 2 parents/umpires, set off to Penrith to attend the NSW CCC Netball Carnival. An excited bunch of girls travelled up on Monday afternoon, competed all day on Tuesday after an early start and returned home that evening. The 7/8 team, experienced some tough competition and while they only came away with one win for the carnival, they developed their skills and their comradery. A special mention must go to Elsa Usaia who continuously motivated and lifted the spirits of the team the entire day. The 9/10 team had a tough start to the day but progressed with a goal of playing for and supporting each other on and off the court. They came away with 2 draws, 2 wins and 2 losses which demonstrates the depth of competition at this competition. The year 9/10 special mention goes to Kiara Allan who played 6 out of the 7 positions on the court throughout the day, and crushed every single one of them. A massive thank you must go to the girls for representing JPC with pride and demonstrating the values of our school within their actions; to our umpires, Carolina and Mandy for taking time out of their work week to join us; to the parents, for supporting the event so willingly and to Sally Dawe for her coaching expertise. Anyone for Softball? Hurricanes Softball Club is one of Northside’s premium softball clubs in ACT and caters for primary and high school boys and girls (5-17 years). Hurricanes is committed to providing players and their families with a Club that will not only support players’ current needs, but their future growth and development in softball and the broader community. Key to our efforts is the continued identification and development of talent, among the players (teenaged) and their families. Through this, the Club further provides an increased, supportive and responsible network of coaches, mentors, scorers and managers that will contribute towards the continued development of its players’ esteem and confidence while also promoting positive values of gender, individually and as part of social interaction. Families are additionally provided opportunities, and are supported to further their own development as either participants (adult social teams), support staff (coaches, scorers, managers, etc) or as active spectators. Club players are enabled to better engage with their family-based environment. Our culture actively engages direct and associated components that provide an opportunity for increased positive social interaction. We have multiple teams being entered in the next season on a Saturday morning and mid-week competitions so why not come and play for the Hurricanes! The training season commences in mid-September 2019 so complete your registration form completed now via our website to secure your place on a team.
