FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPALVaughan Cleary - Acting Principal In this our last week of term we have had two significant events. First the Athletics Day on Tuesday 30 March where students had a day with their House colleagues engaged in a range of exciting track, field and novelty events. It was another successful carnival where staff and students (for the first time in a long while!) were able to all come together for a whole school event. As Easter looms I would like to wish the Assumption community a joyous and life giving Easter. I hope that it is a period for you all to enjoy some well-earned rest, spend quality time with loved ones and enjoy your favourite chocolate! Open EveningThe College warmly welcomed 650+ guests to our Open Evening on Monday 22 March. The Open Evening highlighted all facets of the College with a variety of displays, performances and works showcased throughout the campus. In addition, a virtual evening was also launched which was very well received. Feedback from both events has been overwhelmingly positive with the conduct of our students who led the tours being a noted standout. A big thank you to all our students and staff for all their hard work on the lead up as well as on the evening. A special thanks to the parents who volunteered their time to assist with the Open Evening free BBQ. Co-CurricularCongratulations to all of our summer sport participants and coaches who had their final game of the AGSV season over the last two weekends. The season was certainly a different one as we started and finished later than the usual summer season. Many students ‘juggled’ school and local sport commitments, that meant for students (and of course parental taxi driver duties), a very hectic Term 1 schedule. Last weekend ACK hosted an Equestrian event at Werribee that was a great success. Congratulations and thank you in particular to Helen Perez for coordinating the event and coaching our team. We are lucky to have such dedicated staff like Helen. We wish those involved in the upcoming weekend all the best. Parent Teacher Academic InterviewsInvitations for parents to book parent teacher interviews with each student’s subject teachers will be sent out shortly (or perhaps have already been distributed by the time you read this). After the success of meetings via video conference we have decided to continue the practice this semester. The first opportunity for interviews will be on Monday 19 April, between 11a.m. and 7p.m. This is a student free day before the commencement of formal classes on Tuesday 20 April. The second opportunity for bookings will be on Monday 26 April between 3.40pm and 7.30pm. More details to come. Holy WeekLast weekend was Palm Sunday, marking the beginning of Holy Week. Palm Sunday is a day that we remember and rejoice in the day that Jesus enters into Jerusalem. As Jesus entered this great city, his followers gathered and laid down palm branches in addition to their cloaks, a gesture fit for ‘royalty’. Particularly important for Catholics are the three days leading up to Easter Sunday (Easter Triduum). On Holy Thursday liturgies often re-enactment the Last Supper which Jesus shared with his disciples before being betrayed by Judas Iscariot and arrested. Good Friday or as some call it ‘Holy’ Friday is the day of Christ’s crucifixion and death. This is a day we remember and commemorate the suffering endured by Jesus in preparation for the resurrection on Easter Sunday. Easter since the early days of the Church has been viewed by Christians as the most significant feast. In Corinthians, 15:14 written by Saint Paul “and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain”. This means that without the Resurrection of Christ- there would be no Christian faith. Through his death and resurrection Christ brings us the promise of new life. Watch our Easter Liturgy: FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL WELLBEINGPeter Augustin - Deputy Principal Wellbeing Athletics DayThe Athletics day held on Monday 30 March was a great celebration for our students and staff. In consultation with out Student Leaders, this year the Athletics Carnival took on a new format with a combination of traditional ‘Athletic’ events as well as a range of novelty events to challenge and entertain our students. The VCAL students co-ordinated fundraising for the Relay For Life and Caritas appeal through the lunch rotation which saw 7 Food trucks and an entertaining area which was busy all day long raising over $1500 for these fantastic charities. Thank you to all of the students who actively participated throughout the day and particularly to the student leaders and staff for all of their hard work in the lead up to and during the event.
