No images? Click here ![]() Kia Ora , We made it! (or almost anyway). What a year 2023 has been. I think we would all agree it has mostly been a challenging year. The economy, inflation, interest rates, an election, and many other factors have challenged us all. But here we are at the end of the year, and 2024 is just around the corner. We get a lot of great feedback about our work and so I was going to list all of the things we have done through the year. But in the end, all I really want to say is THANKS. THANKS to all of the people we work with. Thanks to our partners, our members, our supporters, our two local councils and their teams, our schools, teachers and careers advisors, and of course thanks to you, our amazing Hutt Valley business community. There is so much to love about working here in the Hutt Valley. Behind every door there are people innovating, making, supporting and most of all working hard to make business a success. And of course thanks to the team here at the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce. We love working here and working to support the business community. We will do even more of it in 2024. THANK YOU for an amazing year. Onwards and upwards in 2024. ![]() A Huge Thank you to all our Partners for your continued support. ![]() ![]() In this edition of the Hutt Valley Business Weekly:
![]() ![]() Te Awa Kairangi Recap 2023 | Looking forward to 2024As the Interim Project Alliance Agreement project continues to move forward in the Interim Project Alliance Agreement (IPAA) phase we thought it would be great to update you on whats happened so far and what the aims of the projects are. ![]() Daly Street Redevelopment ![]() The Daly Street redevelopment has achieved a major milestone with the demolition of buildings on Daly Street, signifying a crucial phase in the area's transformation. Currently, the project is in the phase of clearing and preparing sites for future urban development. This initiative is a crucial step in transforming the area into a dynamic urban space. Melling Line Closure ![]() In August 2023, Greater Wellington councillors endorsed an 18-month closure of the Melling Line starting July 2024. This closure is essential for constructing crucial infrastructure, including a new interchange over State Highway 2 and a bridge over Te Awa Kairangi / Hutt River. Alternative transport options are being considered to mitigate disruption. Closing the line ensures safety, reduces costs, and expedites construction. The heritage Melling station will be relocated and upgraded with new facilities. ![]() Gravel Extraction at Te Awa Kairangi / Hutt River ![]() In September and October 2023, significant gravel extraction was undertaken at Te Awa Kairangi/Hutt River, south of Kennedy Good Bridge. Approximately 19,000 cubic meters of gravel were moved to aid future construction efforts. This efficient operation, completed in six weeks instead of the expected three months, included environmental remediation efforts like embankment and pathway restoration. These measures ensure the stability and safety of the riverbed and surrounding areas. Property Demolition and Removal ![]() The property demolition and removal project at Te Awa Kairangi is making significant strides. Properties on Mills, Eastern Pharazyn, Western Pharazyn, and Marsden Streets are being removed, with progress varying across locations. This effort is key to flood protection, allowing the expansion of riverbanks and the creation of new urban spaces. The project emphasises recycling and repurposing materials, highlighted by a successful Salvage Day for the community. Safety measures, including asbestos surveys, are diligently followed to ensure public wellbeing. ![]()

Formal consultation on Greater Wellington’s draft Long Term Plan opens in late-March 2024 and will be focused on the themes of a resilient future, a thriving environment and connected communities. ![]() Hutt City Council | District Plan Review![]() Hutt City Council has overhauled the city’s District Plan and released a draft for public feedback ahead of further review and statutory consultation on a proposed District Plan in 2024. The public survey at hutt.city/dpsurvey closes on 15 December, but written submissions will be accepted through until the end of January. Summaries of the key proposed changes, along with the full draft plan and maps are at hutt.city/dpreview and Council is keen to hear from the business and commercial sector, as well as the wider community. You can get in touch with questions on 04 560 7426 or district.plan@huttcity.govt.nz, which is also the address for submissions. The District Planning team is happy to meet with people at Council hubs or on-site at their business, as a group meeting or one-on-one. ![]() ![]() Update from Hutt City Council – Heretaunga Block Hutt HospitalThe earthquake-prone building notice (EPB notice) for the Heretaunga Block at Hutt Hospital has been lifted following additional engineering information submitted to Hutt City Council by Te Whatu Ora regarding the Heretaunga Block’s seismic status. They will be providing an update on the Hutt City Council website today including releasing the engineering advice that led to our decision. Te Whatu Ora will issue a press release. In June 2022, Hutt City Council notified the Hutt Valley District Health Board (DHB) and Te Whatu Ora that the Heretaunga Block was determined to be earthquake-prone under the Building Act. The DHB was then given seven-and-a-half years to resolve the earthquake prone building status or to provide further engineering advice. A peer review of the additional engineering advice undertaken by Beca on behalf of Te Whatu Ora has provided additional details on the Heretaunga Block’s façade. Hutt City Council has considered this advice and as the building is now rated at more than 33%NBS (35%NBS(IL3), and no longer earthquake-prone under section 133AK of the Building Act 2004, the EPB notice will be lifted. Te Whatu Ora has also commissioned new Detailed Seismic Assessments on other buildings at the Hutt Hospital site. ![]() ![]()
