MEMO: Increased iGAS in Ontario

On May 23, 2023 the Ministry of Health issued a memo regarding increased invasive Group A Streptococcal Disease (iGAS) cases in Ontario and to be alert for the signs of symptoms of iGAS in patients presenting with illness compatible with non-invasive GAS infections. The memo also includes

  • Complications of iGAS and populations at increased risk
  • Current surveillance data
  • Actions for healthcare providers

As a reminder, iGAS is required to be reported immediately to the Medical Officer of Health. To report, contact the Infectious Disease Program at
