JPC Key Message Week 9, Term 2 2020

Made for More!

Year 8 & 9 Retreats

Year 8 and 9 RE classes have been taking part in small group retreats here at JPC, based on an Introduction to Youth Ministry program called Made for More. This initiative encourages students to take the opportunity to join our Youth Ministry Elective Course in Semester 2 through their RE lessons.

This experience has been a great start to introduce youth ministry in the classroom and the students have been amazing at understanding and being involved. A special shout out to the school’s Youth Ministry Team members Emma Bramham, Oliva Mugridge, Ella Coulquhoun, Ashish Nair, Paris Morris, Tia Morris, Campbell Ellis and Adau Kuir who took on this challenge and helped make the retreats flow so smoothly.

Together we aim to spread the love and teachings of the Gospel to all and create a safe and nurturing space for our school’s faith development.

Youth Minister

Senior Results

As per the Senior Assessment Schedule (see the Assessment Handbook on the website), Senior Student final semester results are formally released on Wednesday, Week 10, 1 July at 10am.  At this time, students’ finalised Grades and all scores for Tertiary subjects will be available on students’ personal BSSS Profiles online.  http://www.bsss.act.edu.au/information_for_students/profiles_online

Please refer to the ‘Detail Information’ link on the above page for full details of access and explanation of available student data (score, z-score, grade, mean & standard deviation of the group, ranking). This site is managed by the BSSS.

While students may see grades populating their profiles as JPC data is entered, these are not formally approved or released until Week 10. No scores will be visible before formal publication on 1 July,
10:00 am.

We encourage parents to view their student’s results with them online; this will provide the most comprehensive information. The JPC Semester Report will have the Grade only. Parent’s of Tertiary Package students who would like a printed copy of their student’s semester results (grades, scores) can request a copy by emailing Dr Cleary ann.cleary@cg.catholic.edu.au.

Students have 5 days after the formal release time to check with teachers (first) or lodge an appeal on their FINAL results (not individual tasks; see the Senior Assessment Handbook on the website).

Well done to all JPC Seniors on making it through such a difficult semester.

Electives – Year 9 and 10

There have been a few enquiries by students in Years 9 and 10 about changing electives for Semester 2. Given the extensive consultation process and opportunity to request a change offered at the start of the year, there is no opportunity for students to make further requests. Classes, including staffing, have been set for the year. Students will be formally advised of their Semester 2 elective when their timetables are formally released on the first day of Term 3.

Exceptional conditions would need to be evidenced for any request to be considered (e.g. undertaking a year-long elective but struggling academically to engage); having selected a second unit in the same area and deciding variety would be more conducive to study (e.g. in Law 1 and Law 2; Graphic Design 1 and Graphic Design 2). Any such requests would be made AFTER the Term 3 timetables are released (Week 1 ONLY)  and emailed to ann.cleary@cg.catholic.edu.au.  Only students with exceptional cases will be considered and they will need to select from electives that have existing capacity to take an additional student.

Hotstart Program

Archie Phillips, Skye Bradbury and Olenka Moran completed the Hotstart hospitality program this week. The program was held at Gungahlin College in collaboration with renowned chefs from around Canberra. Students learnt essential hospitality and workplace skills and contributed to the OzHarvest project by preparing nearly 200 meals.

These students celebrated their graduation for this program with a small presentation of their designed canapes and represented JPC well with their exceptional service and engagement.

Well done!

Year 9/10 Forensic Science

WHODUNNIT????

Our Forensic Investigators in Years 9 and 10 put the skills which they have developed over this semester to the test in our last lesson of the inaugural Forensic Science Elective, with Mrs Conlan and Mrs Tually.

The investigators analysed blood splatter patterns, knife wounds in real flesh, DNA electrophoresis samples, hair and clothing fibres, the life cycle of flies (love those maggots!), fingerprints, and ballistic analysis of bullet cartridges.

Some of our students have expressed a keen desire to enter the world of forensic science in the future and if their enthusiasm and interest are anything to go by, they will have great careers in this field.

Year 11 and 12 Digital Technologies

This term Year 11 and Year 12 Digital Technologies were tasked with creating a short animation that is designed to entertain, inform or promote a product. This video are the final products that they produced, we hope you enjoy their creativity - Click on the image below to watch.

Black Lives Matter Movement

Last week in Religious Education the Year 10s had the opportunity to discuss the Black Lives Matter movement and white privilege. At the beginning of the week the students debated a number of topics such as ‘is Australia a fair country’ and ‘race is our primary identity’. At the end of the week students participated in a diversity walk. They were given a different person ranging from the wealthiest in Australia to the poorest and most marginalised. Students could physically see how far privilege can take you in life. Below are some thoughts on the week from some of the students:

I learnt that there is so much discrimination against what a person looks like as people link it to the stereotype of that specific person, of what they have seen in the media. In addition to the furious resistance of this type of discrimination in relation to the black lives matter movement which demonstrates how essential it is to reach the dream of equality as humans do more harm to others.
Mehtaab Grewal

Both the diversity walk and debates from last week were very insightful not only to what is happening in the world but also what the other people in my class are thinking about what is happening in the world. I really enjoyed the activities and hope we can do similar things in the future like this.
Nina Buckley

  • Each and every debate has numerous perspectives and viewpoints that are justifiable, but they are worthless unless one is able to put them into a cohesive statement.
  • A remarkable majority of peoples fall upon the extreme left in terms of their belief on certain topics (E.g, Racism, BLM, Etc).
  • As seen in our activity regarding movement based on whether a statement applies to our antecedently given characteristics, the world is very much divided into a slew of peoples that are consistently going through issues and the inherent advantages in society such as race, religion and otherwise were depicted define these issues, whether they occur at all and their severity.
    Darshan Rajinikanth

It was so wonderful to see everyone engage in the activities and show care and compassion to minority groups around the world!

GO PINK!

Hi, my name is Maddie. This month I decided to GO PINK to raise money for breast cancer research. My Grandma is a breast cancer survivor, and when my auntie’s friend had a relapse they decided to join the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s GO PINK campaign. I joined the team and went pink on 19th June, my auntie went pink in early June and my Grandmother dyed her hair and then shaved it on the 16th of June.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation has a goal of no deaths from breast cancer by 2030. Did you know that over 100 women in Australia die each year from breast cancer and that breast cancer is the most highly diagnosed type of cancer in the country?

Funds raised go towards research that will detect tumours earlier, improve outcomes and save lives. By making my pledge to GO PINK I will be raising money that will help save lives.

I would love your support for this great cause. To donate visit my fundraising page here by the 30 June 2020.

Thank you

Maddie Heywood, Year 7

Arts Up Front

Visual Art Class

This week was our last week together with our combined year 9 and 10 visual art classes. We decided to have some fun after our sculpture unit and were inspired by Bob Ross to paint an acrylic nature scenery. These paintings were created in 1.5 lessons and students thoroughly enjoyed trying an alternative arts practice to what they have been working on this Semester. If you wish to purchase one of these beautiful pieces, we think they could sell for $1 million each.

Messages from the Office

  • Absences can now be explained by return SMS
  • A reminder that students should NOT contact parents during the day to come and collect them – they need to come to the office so we can contact the parent
  • Early Departure - Please send an Email to the office (copy your child) if an early departure is required. The student can then show the email to their teacher, sign out at the college office then meet you in the carpark. You won’t need to come into the school.
  • Families will receive an email next week requesting explanations for Unexplained Absences – please note that our records for Term 1 and 2  may not be 100% accurate due to the introduction of our new Attendance System and the COVID situation.  Please explain those absences that can be explained and write “not absent” for those recorded incorrectly so we can adjust our records. Moving forward the emails will be sent every couple of weeks to ensure that no absence goes unexplained for too long.
  • Please ensure contact details and medical action plans are up to date

Thank you

Updated public transport timetables
from 18 July 2020

From Saturday 18 July 2020, Transport Canberra will be updating timetables for bus services.

As a new timetable is being introduced, there will be minor changes for all students travelling to and from school on public transport across Canberra from the first day of Term 3, 2020 (Monday 20 July 2020). In most cases, this will mean that students will catch the same service from the same stop, but the times that services arrive and leave may change.

In addition, Transport Canberra has made the following changes:
Adjustments to school buses for St John Paul II College

  • From Term 3, there will be minor adjustments to school special services for St John Paul II College.
  • School route 1001 has been more popular than expected, and there will an additional school route 1001 service each afternoon on school days to meet high demand. This means that there will be three school route 1001 services leaving the school between 3.52pm and 3.57pm each school day.
  • Similarly, fewer students have been using school route 1002 than expected to travel between Gungahlin Place and the school, with many students choosing to catch route 26 services instead. For this reason, school route 1002 will be reduced to one service each morning and afternoon, instead of two services.
  • All students currently catch school route 1002 will be able to continue to do so, or they will also be able to catch route 26 services instead.
  • There will be no changes to services for St John Paul II College during Term 2, 2020.

All schools, parents and students can find out more about the specific changes by:

  • clicking here for updated timetable
  • checking the information packs for each school, which are online at www.transport.act.gov.au
  • checking timetables for each route (including school specials), which are online at www.transport.act.gov.au
  • calling 13 17 10.
