Week 10 - Term 3

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week draws to a close another busy and productive term for students and staff at JPC. On Monday we were delighted to welcome our new Member of the Legislative Assembly, Mr. Deepak-Raj Gupta, MLA. Mr. Gupta spoke to Year 11 and 12 Economics & Global Studies students about his time working in business and international trade, offering valuable industry insights for our senior students. On Wednesday evening we held our first of two Parent/Teacher/Student conferences for this Semester. These evenings offer valuable opportunities for discussing student progress and opportunities for growth, and it was pleasing to see a significant number of families in attendance.

We also celebrated a very successful netball season on Wednesday evening after the Parent/Teacher/Student interviews. This was enthusiastically attended by our very large contingent of netballers. We are incredibly proud of their great achievements this season. Congratulation to the Meteors on winning their Grand Final.

There was no slowing down in Week 10 for our Arts students, with 110 dancers, singers and musicians performing at Floriade on Wednesday. Our special thanks to Miss Sharon Robinson, Miss Ellie Mostyn and Miss Jessica Amos for their preparation of these students and the performances which were a wonderful reflection of the talent in our community.

As we come to the end of Term 3, we bid farewell to some members of staff. Ms. Kath Podger and Mr. Bradley Croker leave our permanent teaching staff to take up new opportunities. We thank them for their contributions to their subject areas, and their care of mentor students in Maathai and Van Thuan House. We also farewell Mrs. Liz Segeri from our Support Staff team. Mrs. Segeri has been a member of our staff for the last 5 years and has worked in a range of capacities, most recently in our Finance team. We wish her the very best of success in her new venture.

Term 4 will see us welcome students back in full summer uniform. We encourage you to check uniforms over the break, particularly in response to growth spurts over winter. We hope the new term will bring us mild, sunny weather to enjoy, and as a result, students are reminded of the requirement to be wearing a JPC bucket or plain navy blue hat when outside at break times.

In looking forward to next term, we have decided to trial an altered timetable, taking into account the fact that in our current structure, breaks are very close together. Lessons will remain at 60 minutes, but we will adjust our break times to have a longer lunch break at the end of Period 2, and then a shorter recess break at the conclusion of Period 4. There will now be only one lesson after the second break. We believe it will be beneficial for students to only have one lesson after the second break. This change has overwhelming support of College staff parents we have consulted informally.  We will review the trial towards the end of the year. The revised timetable will be as follows:

  • Before school Supervision 8.35 -8.55
  • PC time 9.00 – 9.10
  • Period 1 9.15 – 10.15
  • Period 2 10.20 – 11.20
  • Lunch 1 11.20 – 12:00 (longer break)
  • Period 3 12.05 -1.05
  • Period 4 1.10 – 2.10
  • Recess 2.10 – 2.30 (shorter break)
  • Period 5 2.35 - 3.35
  • After school supervision 3.35 – 3.55

I wish you and your families a safe and restful break. Thank you for your ongoing support, and we look forward to welcoming students back on Monday, 14 October.

JPC Students Raise Their Voices In Support of Climate Action

On Friday 20th September, 50 JPC students from Years 8-12 represented the student body at the global climate action rally in Glebe Park. This was held in preparation for the meeting of world leaders in NY addressing the issues of Climate Change. JPC students are aware of the many issues this raises in terms of social justice and challenges which will face their generation. It was a rally full of energy and the students were inspired by the addresses given by the young leaders. Some thoughts from Jarrod and Finn (Year 12)

“It was good to be around like-minded people”.

“It was great to see such a wide cross-section of people who supported the rally, and a surprising number of really young and committed students”.

“The speakers were engaging and motivated us all to continue to strive for action”.

“We thank the school for this opportunity; it was an action which supported the JPC values of stewardship”.

Global Studies and Economics

On Monday, the newest Member of the Legislative Assembly, Deepak-Raj Gupta visited St John Paul II College. Following a tour with the Principal, Catherine Rey, and Ben Duggan of Catholic Education, he gave a guest talk to the combined Y11/12 Global Studies and Economics classes.

Mr Gupta spoke eloquently about the innate benefits of trade, and the developing relationship between India and Canberra. He shared experiences from his recent trade delegation with Chief Minister, Andrew Barr, and the differences between economic theory and practice. He generously answered questions from the class on a range of topics, including his prior business experience and the future of Australia-Indian relations.

The College would like to thank him for his visit, and look forward to further opportunities for dialogue in the future.

Sports Development

Over the last 2 lessons, the Sports Development students have looked at some practical ways of developing their knowledge of nutrition and recovery in the context of developing an elite athlete’s performance. Last week, they produced some examples of a pre, during and post exercise snacks/meals in the Food Technology rooms and this week we visited the AIS to experience the meals served at the dining hall and the full effects of hot/cold recovery and the plunge pool. This involved relaxing in a nice warm, 37 degrees pool then moving into a 15 degree cold plunge pool. The results were amazing, but the faces in the plunge….even more fantastic.

Floriade Performance

On the 25 of September, 110 dance and music students had the opportunity to perform at Floriade. This day left many of the audiences speechless with how great they did. From the beautiful harmonies to the mind-blowing dance moves from the dancers. Putting all this talent combined together left the crowd roaring and applauding. But this would have not happened if it wasn’t for our wonderful teachers who gave up their time to take us. And our beautiful seniors who gave up their assessment periods to teach us. Most of all I would like to thank the families of our community for joining us on this beautiful day and encouraging us. Thank you

Adau Kuir, Year 10

PE Uniform, Injuries and Notes

As a PE team, we are experiencing a number of students coming to school without their PE uniforms due to injury. While we appreciate the information and notes to explain particular circumstances, we wanted to enlighten you on our wonderful talents as PE teachers. The beauty of our training and experience is that we are able to modify activities in order to reduce harm and involve all students in our lessons, despite injury.

We ask that students who are injured come with a note to provide us with information BUT also with their PE uniform in order to be actively involved in physical education lessons.

A reminder that the PE uniform includes the JPC branded top, shorts/trackpants/tights and a change of socks and joggers with no alterations. Uniform discrepancies then follow our ‘strike’ system:

  • Strike 1= warning to students
  • Strike 2= student contacts home and copies in teacher with developing organisational strategies
  • Strike 3= student to spend lunch with classroom teacher developing organisational strategies
  • Strike 4= PE co-ordinator involved with potential after school workshop.

We appreciate your support and look forward to enriching all students through the physical activity curriculum.

Artwork of the Week

This week’s artist-in-the-spotlight is Paul Tran. Paul submitted this beautiful piece, accented with gold paint, for their Yr 9/10 Visual Arts assessment. For this assessment, students were tasked with the challenge to design characters, with a focus on expression, body language, colour and clothing. Paul’s character designs were inspired by the Tang Dynasty, an ancient Chinese era, with careful consideration of the uniqueness of this culture. Considerations included the incorporation of long hair as a symbol of power, imperial ancient (nobles) silk, embroidered and fur clothing and the use of specific colour symbolization.

If you want to be an artist-in-the-spotlight and would like your artwork to be considered for the ‘artwork of the week’, please make your submission to Ms Swart with a small statement to explain your work. You don’t need to be enrolled in an Arts course to participate. Give it a go and get creating!
