This memo provides information for health care professionals regarding surveillance for measles, and reporting/testing reminders in anticipation of increased travel associated with the March Break period.
While there have been no confirmed cases of measles in Niagara this year, there is ongoing risk of importation through travel from regions of Canada and other countries where transmission is occurring. Measles should be considered in patients presenting with a febrile illness and rash or other compatible symptoms – particularly among inadequately immunized patients with an exposure risk. This can include domestic or international travel or contact with a known measles case or exposure location.
Reporting Suspect and Confirmed Measles Cases
- Suspect and confirmed cases of measles must be reported immediately to Niagara Region Public Health by contacting the Infectious Disease Program:
- Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m., to 4:30 p.m., please call 905-688-8248 or 1-888-505-6074 ext. 7330
- For reports outside regular
business hours or on weekends/holidays, please call 905‑984‑3690
Testing for Measles
- Molecular (PCR) is the preferred testing methodology for diagnosing measles and must include two specimen types:
- Nasopharyngeal or throat swab: collect within 7 days of rash onset; and
- Urine sample: collect within 14 days of rash onset
- Send measles specimens separate from routine specimens and mark STAT on the outside of the package to help prioritize your submissions
- For more information on specimen collection, handling and required requisitions refer to Measles – Diagnostic – PCR | Public Health Ontario
- Serology testing for the purposes of diagnosing measles is not recommended
- Please note effective April 1, 2026, Public Health Ontario announced they will no longer supply specimen collection materials for clinical laboratory testing to most health care providers. This includes NP and throat swabs for measles testing. If you were receiving collection materials from Public Health Ontario, review their reference list of suppliers and vendors for potential alternative sources.
