Bon Voyage for Kathryn and Robin Weber

Robin and Kathryn Weber display the life ring given to them by SYC and signed by many of the well wishers. They will take it with them on their voyage.

We wished Robin and Kathryn Weber a bon voyage as part of our General Meeting last Friday and they set sail on Saturday. Yes - that's right. They went out of the Golden Gate the following day and turned left to Mexico and from there to Hawaii and beyond  - on a personal adventure they have been planning for some time. Many of us dream about it, we all think about it - well they are actually doing it!! It was marvelous to have a packed house to wish them Bon Voyage.

Flag and Director Nomination Report

Our thanks to Kate Humphreys (Chair), Larry Mayne, Steve Holmstrom, Kathy Harris, Lynda Ryan and Dan Doud for their service as our nominating committee for 2014.  We really appreciate their insight, dedication and the care they put into choosing this year’s slate.  I also want to thank everyone who tossed their hat into the ring.  We were very lucky this year to have considerable interest in serving on the board as the discussion at the General Meeting further illustrated.

This year’s slate is as follows:

Flag Nominees –

• Staff Commodore – Peter Blackmore (868)
• Commodore – Winston Bumpus (928)
• Vice Commodore – Dan Lockwood (775)
• Rear Commodore – Rick Gilmore (865)
• Port Captain – James Brown (968)
• Treasurer – Phaedra Fisher (958)
• Secretary – Mrs. Robin Weber (940)

Continuing and Nominated Directors –

• Tim Petersen (924) – Will serve 2nd year of 2-year term
• Michele Hartman (946) – Will serve 2nd year of 2-year term
• Rich Butts (906) – Will serve 2nd year of 2-year term
• Dennis Lowe (852) – Newly nominated for incoming 2-year term
• Clinton Ward (765) - Newly nominated for incoming 2-year term
• George Carr (735) - Newly nominated for incoming 2-year term

A big thank you to our outgoing Directors: Tod Klingler, Dan Doud and John Ryan. We really appreciate all you do for the club.

At the General Meeting on Friday we proposed both the Flag and the Director nominees to the members.  This is the normal process.  The Flag nominees were uncontested. However there were three additional nominations for Directors from the floor and each one was seconded. They were Micky Alm (#980), David Elliott (#951) and Brett Herr (#849)

As a result we have six Directors proposed and we need to select three to fill the vacancies. This will be done by ballot at the next General Meeting.  Each of the candidates has the opportunity to put forward their case including articles published in the Blast. It is a positive that we have so many people interested in supporting our club.  A reminder that, as stated in the by-laws, members have to be present at the General Meeting to vote in person. Absentee votes are not allowed.

Sue Lockwood, Larry Mayne and Nick Weber have kindly stepped forward to manage the ballot process with the support of Mrs. Robin Weber at the next General Meeting on October 11th.

Thanks to the efforts of Past Commodore Steve Holmstrom, all of your Commodores were able to be a part of the America’s Cup Finals last week.  While Staff  Commodore, Kate Humphreys and her son Chris worked on land, Commodore Peter Blackmore on Pied Piper and Vice Commodore Winston Bumpus on Dolci Sogni were accredited and worked the race course as Stakeboats last Thursday.  In addition, Rear Commodore Dan Lockwood, along with his two sons Tom and Will, joined Vice Commodore Winston Bumpus for the day.  On Saturday and Sunday, several other Club members were able to assist Winston and Steve on Dolci Sogni as Stakeboat including Grace and Dennis Lowe, Phaedra Fisher, Joseph Curtis, Ted Eberle and Carole Bumpus, plus Winston’s son, Andrew.  It was an amazing opportunity and a great way to view the races—mostly unobstructed, in spite of the massive flotilla of boats that they helped to fend off the race course.

Regardless of the outcome of America’s Cup, it has truly been great to have the Sequoia Yacht Club Flag so well represented in participation at this historic event.

With spinnaker and non-spinnaker divisions, this is a club competition with the winning club taking home the Barth Perpetual Trophy. The race is scored by combining the results from the spinnaker and non-spinnaker divisions for each club. The club with the lowest combined total score will be the winner.

All skippers should attend the skipper's meeting at 9:30 on the day of the race. The start line is near marker S and the start time is 12:00 and finishes at the Coyote Point Marina breakwater.

The race will be followed by a cruise-in at the Coyote Yacht Club. BBQ hamburgers with fixings will be available after the race ($16.00). All Sequoia Yacht Club racers are invited to Coyote Point Yacht Club after the race to hear the race results and take part in the BBQ.

Come on out to help Sequoia keep the trophy.

Coastal Cleanup Day - September 21, 2013

Coastal Cleanup Day is a great event for your entire family... in fact, for everyone! Invite your friends to join you in helping to keep our creeks, rivers, lakes, coast, and ocean clean, healthy, and safe for all of us.

On Saturday, September 21st from 9am-Noon, cleanups will take place at the Sequoia Yacht Club and more than 800 other locations throughout California.

Help us reduce waste at the Cleanup; Bring your own reusable cleanup supplies from home, like a bucket or reusable bag and work gloves, and we can cut down on the disposable items that we use at the cleanup! We will have additional buckets, bags and t-shirts. Coffee, donuts, and water will be avaialble along with coupons for a free lunch a Chipotle for the first 50 people to show up on Saturday. Bringing your own coffe cugs or water containers will also reduce the amount of waste for the day.

Thanks for all you do to protect California's coastal resources. We look forward to seeing you on California Coastal Cleanup Day!
