Dinner and a Movie, Indonesian-Style

Kartini was the inspirational pioneer of Indonesia’s women’s movement from the early 1900s, when that Asian nation was still a Dutch colony, and women were tightly bound by traditional roles. She's now the subject of a new biographical feature film, “Kartini,” being screened for the first time in Philadelphia, with an appearance by the director, Hanung Bramantyo.
A panel of four Indonesian women who now live in the United States will focus on the lives of women then and now, here and in Indonesia. Tickets are $25, and include a traditional Indonesian communal dinner. Join the Free Library to celebrate the reopening of Mt. Airy's remodeled Lovett branch! Mayor Jim Kenney, Free Library President Siobhan A. Reardon and other special guests will speak at 11 a.m., followed by face-painting, fun learning activities, food, music, giveaways and more. Lovett closed in March 2016 for a major renovation through the "Building Inspiration: 21st Century Libraries Initiative." The building is now
ADA-compliant and includes updated program, meeting and study rooms; three computer lounges; a vibrant, enlarged children’s space; a dedicated Teen Zone; and a customized Pre-K Zone. It also features two site-specific commissioned artworks created by local glassmaker Cooper O’Neil. Come check it out!
