SOUTHERN REGIONAL CONFERENCE

The SMPS Austin Chapter was well represented at this year's Southern Regional Conference, which was held at the Hotel Van Zandt right here in Austin. The conference was a fantastic way to gain knowledge about marketing and business development for the AEC industry and to network with colleagues throughout the region. Starting this month, SMPS Austin will recap some of our favorite sessions through summary articles in our newsletter.

SRC RECAP: How to Position Yourself as a Leader at Any Level

Susan Murphy coaches presentation and interview skills for Murphy Motivation and Training. Her Friday session, “Take This Job & Soar It: How to Position Yourself as a Leader at Any Level” provided great insight into what it takes to become a respected leader.

Just as she starts off each of her presentations, she suggests starting off meetings by letting the audience tell you what they want from the conversation. Let them outline what info they want you to cover. Chances are you were going to cover most of it, but you’ll find the important pieces that will help you go the extra mile for them.

Leadership doesn’t rely on position; it’s the way you present yourself:

  • A leader does not command respect: they earn it.
  • Leadership and selling go hand in hand: when someone is a leader, they’re essentially selling their knowledge and services to their team.
  • A leader does not shove their truth down their team’s throats simply because they think they have the power to do so. A leader will hear everyone’s truths and ultimately do the right thing.
  • A leader delegates but doesn’t dump tasks onto others. When a leader gives someone a task, they also provide the tools and knowledge to accomplish said task rather than handing it off and letting them fail if they’re ill equipped.

CHEESE TASTING

A group of 40 SMPS members and guests enjoyed another lovely wine and cheese tasting, hosted at Antonelli's on January 28. Thanks to Miller IDS for sponsoring our extra wine and to the staff at Antonelli's for such a memorable experience.
