Region awarded for consolidating Niagara Region Transit

June 5, 2024

Today, the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators (CAMA) recognized Niagara Region’s success in creating a consolidated transit system with its 2024 Award for Collaboration within Municipalities.

“CAMA is pleased to recognize the Niagara Region for the municipal excellence and collaboration demonstrated through their regional transit service,” said Tony Kulbisky, CAMA President. “This project is a great example of cooperation that benefits rural and urban residents living in a fast-growing and changing area of Canada.”

Niagara Region Transit was the result of an effort from Niagara Region and the 12 local municipalities to connect all of Niagara by combining Niagara Region Transit, Niagara Falls Transit, St. Catharines Transit, Welland Transit and Fort Erie Transit systems into one transit operator.

“Thanks to the collaboration and hard work of many current and past Chief Administrative Officers, staff, elected officials, community organizations and Niagara residents, we were able to complete the work that started over a decade ago," said Ron Tripp, Chief Administrative Officer, Niagara Region. “The consolidation of Niagara Region Transit is a testament to the power of collaboration and the shared vision of our municipal leaders.”

The new consolidated transit system facilitates better access to jobs and services in Niagara, creating opportunities for residents in neighbouring municipalities, and new markets for businesses. It also provides residents with more sustainable and environmentally-friendly public transit options, which will help our local environment by reducing traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.

Having one transit system also prepares Niagara for the future, by making sure our transit options can scale up to meet the needs of our growing population and job market as well as support the expansion and connectivity of GO Transit service to the region.
