Key Messages Week 8 - Term 3Got a niggling feeling that someone you know or care about it isn’t behaving as they normally would? Perhaps they seem out of sorts? More agitated or withdrawn? Or they’re just not themselves. Trust that gut instinct and act on it. By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes you’ve noticed, you could help that family member, friend or workmate open up. If they say they are not ok, you can follow our conversation steps to show them they’re supported and help them find strategies to better manage the load. If they are ok, that person will know you’re someone who cares enough to ask. At JPC we encouraged the conversation through sharing a biscuit! The generous Hospitality and Canteen teams along with Mrs Parker, Mrs Daley and Miss McCallum created beautiful cookies to promote and share question R U Ok? Take a minute ask and listen… See the site for more details or direction https://www.ruok.org.au In and Around the School Parliamentary Debating On Friday last week Alara Salvage, Catherine Quach Tran, and Isaac Foster participated in the Year 7/8 Parliamentary Debating at the Legislative Assembly. They won both of their debates (Affirmative—Australia should recycle its own waste; Questioning—Australia should become a republic), and also participated in two whole floor debates, as well as supplying questions without notice to the other teams that competed on the day. Unfortunately, Crystal Agbonzikilo was unable to attend on the day as she was unwell, but she assisted with the preparation for the debates in the lead-up to the day. Tara Foster and Noah Batten were also instrumental in helping the team to research and prepare for this day. Please make sure you congratulate all of these students on their efforts! Jessica Reid Leader of Wellbeing—Vanier House Singfest On Monday 9th Sept, the three JPC Vocal groups went to the ANU School of Music to participate in the annual event of Singfest. It was a great experience for all students and we were given useful feedback. The only criticism that we got, was that we were too enthusiastic in terms of volume. I was so proud of that feedback!!! I would like to congratulate all students who attended this event and also thank Mr. Dodd for coming with us. Year 7 2020 Information Evening On Tuesday 10 September we were delighted to welcome Year 6 students and their families to our Year 7 2020 information evening. Students were introduced to their house groups, met the Leaders of Learning and Wellbeing and played games with the student volunteers so they could start the process of getting to know each other. Thank you to the many student volunteers who gave up their time to help make the future year 7's feel welcome. Devising Children’s Theatre Workshops with Canberra Youth Theatre This semester, Senior Drama students are focussing on perfecting their skills in devising theatre for specific target audiences. Visiting tutor, Anna Johnstone, from Canberra Youth Theatre, led 3 one-hour expert workshops with the Years 11/12 Drama class this week. Anna has been working in Australia and England, sharing her expertise in devising theatre and productions. As part of the Senior Drama course, students are studying Theatre for Young People, in particular, Children’s Theatre. The purpose of our study involves exploring relevant thematic concerns and appropriate styles to engage, entertain and educate a target audience of Year 1 students. As additional support and exposure in preparing students to create their major performance piece next term, they explored different devising and creativity processes this week. Students engaged with the RSVP approach and delivery of characters. In addition, with theatresports and playbuilding activities, students culminated their learning into a devised theatre performance. A great learning experience and opportunities for the Senior drama students to work with industry professionals to continue to grow their knowledge and understanding of theatre forms. With their ongoing hard work, their end of year major performance in Week 15 next term, is sure to be a great one! Stay tuned for details. Chookas! Mrs Smith Senior Drama Teacher Possum Magic at Canberra Theatre The cultural experiences continue for Drama students at JPC. Last Friday, Years 11/12 Drama students attended Monkey Baa’s production of Mem Fox Possum Magic at the Canberra Theatre. Students not only viewed the performance, but also watched the excitement from the young audience members, followed by Q&A with the performers. Possum Magic takes us on a whimsical journey to cities around Australia to find the food that makes Hush visible again, following the lead of Grandma Poss. The extraordinary creative team, Monkey Baa brought to life the characters, journey and love that has made Possum Magic the most-loved and best-selling Australian picture book of all time. The narrative was an enjoyable mix of high-energy, magic and travel – all presented by only four performers! JPC was proudly represented by the students’ insightful interpretations of the performance metaphors and symbolism throughout the performance of Possum Magic. Mrs Smith Senior Drama Teacher Dance Fest On Thursday 12 September a group of 22 dancers participated in Dance Fest 2019 which has now been running in Canberra for 35 years. Our performance blew the audience away! The dancers performed incredibly, so many people have complimented JPC on their sophisticated attitude and outstanding performance quality. A huge thank you to the staff and students who came to support the 2019 Dance Fest performance titled Etre Coince (to be stuck) at the Canberra Theatre last night. A huge thank you to Natasha Bramham and Jess Amos for their amazing support and assistance throughout the day. Congratulations Dancers on your incredible Dance Fest achievement. Thank you, Ms Mostyn Dancers

Sport Defence Careers Work Experience Thank you again to those families offering to accept JPC students for Work Experience (WEX), the list is growing and we really appreciate how much is involved in accepting a student. Information for parents/carers on the process of how to arrange Work Experience can be found on the JPC website CanteenCafeteria Corner Across the course of this week, we were treated to continued mouth-watering experiences. When we think of Michelin Star restaurants we for sure need to give consideration to the amazing assortment of culinary delights on show made by our talented kitchen ladies. This week we experienced Meat al la bun Yumbo – which was made up of fresh, not too spicy salami and salad that was so crisp it needed to be eaten outside – to ensure we did not distract our AST senior students due to the large audible crunching- sensational!! We were also tantalized by an RUOK fondant cookie that simply melted in our mouths! It was a biscuit that highlighted a great cause and were sold out very quickly. Not only did it demonstrate how our community care for each other it also highlighted the skills of our kitchen ladies and senior food/hospo students – they can make this for us every day of the week – it was on point!! Look forward to next weeks food gifts!! 😊 Montana and Nikala, Year 7
