The Lutheran family worldwide (through LWF) is responding quickly to the crisis in Iraq. Christians are fleeing northern Iraq (where their communities have lived almost 2000 years) under the threat of death by ISIS. As they and other displaced people reach the relative safety of the Kurdish-controlled Nineveh plain, our Lutheran team will meet them with:

  • clean water ($38 per family) – 12,500 families
  • two-month food baskets ($53 per family) – 2500 families
  • trauma counselling ($6 per person) – 5000 people.

Our team is working with other churches around the world through ACT Alliance. Our total Lutheran plan is costed at $711,000. Find out more, and donate, at Australian Lutheran World Service.

SOUTH SUDAN: CRISIS DEEPENS

In South Sudan, our Lutheran team has been forced to evacuate from Maban Country following the targeted killing of six aid workers from other agencies. We thank God all 27 members of the Lutheran team are safe. More than 127,000 refugees and community members in Maban County need life-saving care. That’s why, along with other aid agencies, our Lutheran team remains committed to the work there. We will return, and work will resume, as soon as staff safety is acceptable. ALWS has committed $600,000 to South Sudan in 2014, and the same amount for 2015. For more information, and to donate: Australian Lutheran World Service.

FRITZSCHE ORATION, ADELAIDE

Thankfully you don't need to spell or pronounce the Fritzsche Oration correctly in order to gain access to this event. It's jointly hosted by Australian Lutheran Institute for Theology and Ethics (ALITE) and LCA Board of Lutheran Archives. This year's oration, 'Dr Hermann Sasse, Lutheran theologian', will be delivered by ALC emeritus lecturer Rev Dr Maurice Schild. Monday, 18 August, at 7.30 pm at ALC. More information.

The Servant of Christ Award is administered through the Office of the Bishop. The award recognises outstanding Christian service by members of the LCA, with the aim of honouring lay service. LCA districts, committees, agencies and congregations are invited to nominate candidates for the award. Closing date for nominations: 15 August. More information, and nomination form.
