Combatting urges Day 9: Combat addictive urgesJesus asked, “What do you want?” John 1:38 What do you really want? What do you desire? What do you long for? What are your deepest wishes? Spirituality is how you live out your deepest longing, day by day, year by year, in and through all the ups and downs of life. Buddhism talks about freedom from “craving and aversion”. It is certainly the case that we are full of wants and wishes and desires. Lockdown has impacted our mental and spiritual wellbeing. We may be drinking more, binge watching hours of television or spending too much time looking at our phones. “Lose sight of the space and you lose sight of your soul”. As lost sheep in the desert of our urges we are continually sought by our Lord who never abandons us but keeps us safe in the hope and knowledge of his love. When Jesus desires to restore us, let us be on the look out so that we recognise him when he comes to us. “What do you want me to do for you?" asks Jesus Mark 10:51.
