Thousands turn out for Open Day

Story
Story

Our Project Open Day on 3 March was a big hit.

Our survey drones, scale models, videos and displays attracted 2500 people, and 1200 took up the offer of a free bus tour on to our work site. Visitors were surprised to find their buses were escorted along our ‘live’ haul road, with dumptrucks and motorscapers travelling past. Buses travelled over a newly constructed bridge, through a new interchange area and viewed large diggers excavating sand.

Visitors crowded around our new scale model of the Southern Interchange and watched our survey drones in flight. They got their hands dirty sampling the soils on site, learned how we treat stormwater, learned about water treatment and bridge abutments, and sent to kids digging for treasures in our sandpit.

We’ll be back with another Open Day in March 2019.

Big retaining wall almost finished

Here’s a timelapse sequence showing how we built a 16m-high retaining wall at the Southern Interchange. Those big sand stockpiles you may have seen on SH1 at Tamahere are being used to build this wall. Click the video below to see a timelapse sequence showing how we built it.

Lifting beams at Kay Road

All 21 bridge beams have been lifted into place at the Kay Road bridge, and our construction crew is now building backwalls and preparing for the concrete deck pour. There’s also a great video showing our team installing the crossheads prior to the beams being laid.

New roundabout under construction

We’re building a new roundabout at the intersection of SH26-Morrinsville Road and Ruakura Road. We’re also rebuilding the section of Ruakura Road between the roundabout site and Vaile Road. Access through this section of Ruakura Road is currently one-way north-bound. Our pavement team are pictured digging out the existing pavement along Ruakura Road and rebuilding it.

Excavating under the Morrinsville Road Bridge

We opened this bridge on SH26-Morrinsville Road in November last year. Now we’re excavating the expressway route under the bridge.
