Regent News.

Dear College families,

At Regent College it is our intention and hope that your children will love learning! I suspect the following images offer some evidence of this. Another way for you to find out is by asking your child; possibly less of, "How was school today?" and more of "What did you do in Science, today?" The second question provides greater scope and opens up conversation. It is in talking about learning that you will get a clearer impression of your child's progress and enjoyment!

God bless,

Derek Nicholls. Principal.

A final reminder that tomorrow (Thursday 2nd) and Friday 3rd June are student free days - staff are attending the Better Education Conference. School resumes on Tuesday 7th June following the WA Day public holiday.

Autumn/winter seasons always mean unpredictable weather. This term, premium outdoor learning occurs only when the weather permits, and when it does, it brings a big smile to the children's faces. Bikes were taken out for the first time and did they have fun! They enjoyed being traffic wardens, maintenance people at pit stops for the bikes to be refilled with petrol or just being passengers! They also had fun painting, measuring and counting outdoors!

PRE-PRIMARY During the last few weeks in pre-primary, we have been continuing our learning theme of Staying Alive. Recently, we had a very special visitor in our classroom - Miss Bakers' dog, Griffin. Griffin joined us for the day. We had so much fun learning about all the things we need to do in order to take care of Griffin. He needs to be taken for a walk, chase a ball for exercise, have plenty of water and food, and someone needs to clean up after him!

In Science we also learnt about other animals and pets, and what they need to survive.

YEAR 1. The Year 1 classes have been busy learning about dinosaurs. To help us learn more about dinosaurs, we went to the Perth Zoo to see Zoorassic Park. We walked to the bus stop near the school oval to catch the bus to the Elizabeth Quay and then to the Zoo. The Zoo was a fantastic excursion! After learning about the dinosaur timeline, we went on a dinosaur hunt in small group. As we found the dinosaurs around the Zoo, we ticked them off our list. We then had lunch on the main lawn with some very sociable seagulls. Once we had finished our lunch, we spent some time in the Playleozone excavating some fossils. Finally we caught two buses home to concluded our wonderful day.

YEAR 2 Recently during Science, we had to investigate various items and whether each would sink or float when placed in water - we first had to predict. It was a lot of fun! Also, we managed to get something to float that originally sunk. You guessed it, we changed its shape. Q. The item? A. Plasticine.

Also, you may not be aware, but air is everywhere and it actually takes up space! During the Science investigation below, we managed to keep a tissue dry, even though it was below the waterline. Amazing!

YEAR 2/3 Recently, during Mathematics, the Year 2 students explored the connection between addition and subtraction. They recorded their number sentences on whiteboards.

The class enjoyed participating in a Recycling Education Program run by the Town of Victoria park. Students learned how we can help our environment everyday by reducing, reusing and recycling our household waste. The incursion consisted of two hands-on 60 minute sessions, delivered over two weeks. Students were engaged in the learning process by interactive, practical and hands on activities as well as a short movie which showcased the recycling facility.  Every student received a gift of a miniature recycling bin. Be prepared to start a new era of recycling at your house!

YEAR 3 In Science we have been classifying objects into 3 states of matter – solids, liquids or gases.

During our incursion about recycling and sustainability we learned that plastics are made from oil and that we need to put our plastic bottles in the recycling bin.

Edudance is getting us so fit and we are having lots of fun!

In Mathematics, we have been doing chance experiments with coin tossing and making predictions and tallies.

YEAR 4.1 Students are enjoying their LEGOmotion Discovery through their designs and procedures in Design and Technologies; short films of Bible stories using a stop animation app in ITC; Italian character development and voice overs for short films in Italian with backing tracks produced in Music.  Also using LEGO, Year 4.1 has investigated Mathmatical concepts such as times tables, as seen in the photographs below.

Students have also been busy researching for their assembly presentation (recently presented on the 25th of May) titled The Great South Land.  This performance was based on the early discoveries of Terra Australis and the process of mapping Australia’s coastline by several explorers over many years.  They will continue their investigation into Australia’s history with a look at convicts and the effects of early settlement on Indigenous Australians throughout the term.

The Year 4 Person of the Week began this term as well with Ben Pope, Rachel Johnson and Tristan Heather presenting excellent displays and oral presentations.  Everyone is working hard and looking forward to more amazing performances with Edudance and TEDdy Talks towards the end of this term.

TABLE TENNIS The College recently purchased four table tennis sets and the Year 4, 5 and 6 students have been receiving tuition from a specialist coach as part of their Physical Education classes. All students (Years 1-6) will be able to enjoy using their new tables in coming weeks. Mrs French

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES "Kodable" is an integral component of our coding curriculum.  Students use programming codes to get their fuzzy character through a maze.  By doing this, they learn problem solving, computational thinking, sequence, conditions, loops, functions and debugging.  These are skills necessary for learning any programming language.

Mrs Saxton

'I Dinosauri' In Italian, the Year Ones have been focusing on dinosaurs in relation to their class theme. They made a book which they read and played a dice game where they had to describe the dinosaur picture  in terms of size, colour or physical features.

Mrs Kerrigan

PERTH GLORY CLINIC Last Monday was the last session with the Perth Glory development coach. The students played mini games and showed great skills and teamwork. The Perth Glory mascot "George" came and visited at the end of the session. Mrs French.

THE FATHERING PROJECT Last weekend, a group of dads and Regent students met in Fremantle for a spot of fishing. It was a fun time together and a few fish were even caught.

WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY Last Friday families were invited to meet early at Raphael Park and then enjoy a walk around the oval before heading back to school for a healthy snack. The intention was to participate in the Walk Safely to School campaign. Thank you to all families who participated. Mrs French.
