Winter Race #3 Results
This is a five-race series with one throw-out race. The starting line is between Redwood Creek Channel Markers 3 and 4.
Race #3 on 01/04/14 was typical of the light winter air but was well attended with 17 boats in the heat. Unfortunately, the air was so light that 6 boats (out of 7) in the Non-spinnaker Division didn't finish within the race's time limit. But according to some of the less-fierce competitors it was a beautiful day for just being on the water.
In the Spinnaker Division, finishing 1-2-3 were Head Rush (Peter Weigt), Wildy (Jenny Thompson) and Relentless (Tracy Rogers).
In the Non-spinnaker Division the win went to Pole Cat (Dan Doud) with all competitors showing DNF's (Did Not Finish) but getting points for their participation.
Check out some great photos of the race on FaceBook and DropBox!

Let's Go Cruising
Our January cruise-out to South Beach is now closed! We've booked all the slips and are at capacity for dinner. Unfortunately at this time we can't add any more cruisers, boat or blacktop.
Are you going to miss the January cruise-out? Did you wait too long to sign up? We are just over a month away from our annual trip to Jack London Square!
This is a very popular cruise out and spaces fill up quickly, already over 5 boats signed up. This cruise out allows amazing access to downtown, and this year's show at Yoshi's promises a fun night. Sign up at the club or on line at Cruise-out Form.

75th Anniversary Celebration
|
|
| |
This year the Sequoia Yacht Club will be celebrating its 75th anniversary. This means three things: First, this is a great opportunity to celebrate and highlight our rich traditions and history. Second, this gives our older members an opportunity to dust off their best ‘salty tales’ and regale us throughout the year. And, third, this gives us even more reasons to party. And, we have several key events happening over the next several months which will allow us to do all.
First, we are kicking off the 75th Anniversary festivities on February 22nd with an all-member crab feed and Anniversary Party! (Think birthday party!) And to kick this up a notch, we are bringing in a band to ‘jazz’ up our festivities. Rumor has it we will also be having a cruise-in to our Club from the Bay View Boat Club as well, which will follow the Redwood Cup Race #4. So we are expecting a packed house for this event. Sign-up sheets will be posted shortly.
The second major activity and celebration is the new photographic exhibit being highlighted at the San Mateo History Museum in Redwood City. A Salute to the Sequoia Yacht Club, the new Rotunda exhibit, will feature the Sequoia Yacht Club and our 75 years of sailing on the South Bay. This exhibit will feature old photos gleaned from our historians focusing on our illustrious past. The Exhibit will open on the 30th of January and continue into the month of May, but the major event, which will feature a reception for not only our old sailors and our bold sailors, but our junior sailors as well, will be held on March 16th. We will need volunteers to help with demonstrations, the reception, and support in this exhibit. Staff Commodore Peter Blackmore is leading this event and more information will be following.
Thirdly, in April, we have the privilege once again to host the (PICYA) Pacific Inter-Club Yachting Association Delegates meeting. This is a very special event for us to showcase our Club and the 75th Anniversary, as it will be attended by representatives from over 100 member clubs from Northern California.
The fourth celebration will be our South Bay Opening Day on May 3rd, where we will continue the theme and use the Anniversary as a way to share with the community. Stay tuned because our Rear Commodore, Rick Gilmore, will have plenty of surprises up his sleeve.
And, don’t think we will stop celebrating when Summer comes around. Another rumor has it that we will once again have a Sequoia Yacht Club float in the 4th of July parade—the first in many years! We’re bringing in some of the older members to scratch their heads and try to recall how on earth this all came together. And, speaking of scratching heads and digging deep into the archives of Sequoia’s history, we will have throughout the year (at the monthly meetings) a short talk or more than likely a ‘tall tale’ told by one of our elite elderly members. Plus, we are hoping to interview and videotape any and all of the folks of this Club willing to have their stories archived for the many generations to come.
So this will be a year to celebrate, reflect and party throughout our 75th Anniversary.

Change of the Guard for the Blast
Carole and I have had a great time working on the weekly Blast during 2013. It has become a good source of timely information for the Club and a way to reduce the number of emails, by consolidating information into a single Blast. With our new duties with the role of Commodore and putting on the Wednesday lunch, we had been looking for someone to step in and take a turn at the helm of the Blast.
I am so pleased to report that Past Commodore Byron Jacobs and his wife, Jeanne, have agreed to take this on. We are lucky to have a couple so capable and willing and I am sure it will be better than ever.
If you have articles or information you would like to have sent out in the Blast, please forward that information to Byron and Jeanne at byron@monttech.com.
Thanks again to Byron and Jeanne for stepping up to take on the role as editors and publishers of the Sequoia Yacht Club Weekly Blast.
