Last month, we were approached by the neighbor behind Foundation House. They wanted to offer us the opportunity to expand our supportive recovery housing program by utilizing their property. Umbrella leapt at the opportunity. We know that finding quality, affordable housing in Victoria is an uphill battle for many of the people we serve, and we are proud to expand our award-winning program so that we can support more people on their recovery journey. The new house, lovingly named Potter House, now has 5 residents with plans to add a furry friend from a local rescue soon. Potter House is a third stage recovery house, perfectly situated to support Foundation House residents transitioning to a more independent living situation while remaining connected to the support they rely on. When we accepted the opportunity to take on Potter House, we knew we had a lot of work on our hands to outfit an entire house in a short period of time. We wanted to make it a cozy and welcoming home for the 5 men who would soon be residents. As usual, our community came through, and they went above and beyond. Our community stepped up and friends of Umbrella donated furniture, kitchen items, art and even a lawnmower! After some minor repairs, a bathroom renovation, fresh paint and new curtains, Potter House has become home. With any new home, there are some things that will always cost a bit more money. Pillows, mattresses, shower curtains and other bits and pieces add up quickly. Umbrella has been incredibly fortunate that many of you have chosen to become monthly donors. These regular donations, no matter how small, allow us the flexibility to make careful and thoughtful choices to ensure that our residents have everything they need as they start their time in their new home. They are so appreciative for your ongoing generosity and so are we. These are difficult times for non-profits and your dedication to our work is truly humbling.
