Social Notes from Vice Commodore Dan...

I hope you are enjoying your October!  It is a fine time of year; warm days, light winds and just a hint of what we used to call rain.  And, as you read this, we will all know whether our Giants won the World Series!  Judging from last Tuesday’s performance, it is still a dicey proposition.  (At presstime the Giants are the 2014 World Series Champions! -ed). Okay, onto the social scene…

Speaking of rain, how about the forecast for this Friday, October 31st when Kathy Harris and crew host our annual Halloween Party!  Why go out and buy candy and snacks to offer to your over-fed, over-sugared and unappreciative neighbors when you can come to the club see some friends, enjoy some ghoulish but creative and delicious treats and dance the evening away with the band Time Warp.

That sure beats walking and driving in the rain along dark but bustling neighborhood streets, doesn’t it?

Costumes are optional but appreciated.  I will be attending in my usual Hungry and Thirsty Yacht Club Member costume.   Scary stuff…

Speaking of spectral figures shuffling along in costume, we have the Installation Dinner coming up on November 15th.  I hope you will all put this evening on your calendars.  It is our annual Change of Watch celebration where we honor our outgoing Commodore Winston Bumpus, recognize members who have made special contributions to the Club this year, and welcome our slate of new Officers.  This year Steve Higgs and Jeff Tachibana and company are offering a delicious menu of Roast Sirloin of Beef and Salmon that will no doubt be delicious.

Thanksgiving is also just around the corner.    I hope you share my thought that we don’t have to look far to see just how great our circumstances are and I want to be one of the first to wish you and your family a joyous, glutinous and restful holiday.

However!  There is also a cruise out to Angel Island.  And although it is not my area to mention, it stands out because it can be a very pleasant ferry ride out to the island.  I hope you will consider coming either by your boat or by ferry boat!

I hope you all have been thinking about Holidays – specifically maybe building bicycles for some kids.  I hope to have more information and a sign-up sheet in place by this weekend.

See you around the club!

Winter #1 This Saturday

With the conclusion of the South Bay Championship it's time to look forward to our 2015 racing season. Our racing year starts off with two series: the Winter Series and the Redwood Cup Series.

The first Winter Series race will be held on Saturday Nov. 1. This is a five-race series with one throw-out race.  The starting line is between Redwood Creek Channel Markers 3 and 4.   Due to the typically light winds during the winter, this race series will start at 1:30pm.

Sign-up is on jibeset.net. Contact Tom Anto, the Winter Series Fleet Captain, for more information.

8 Bells for George Wasilewski, Jr.

I have received the sad news that Past Commodore (1987) and friend George Wasilewski, Jr. has passed away.  The obituary that I have just received is below. There is discussions about a possible memorial event at the Club. I will pass that along to you as soon as I have more information.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

George Wasilewski, Jr.

Born in Philadelphia, PA to Anna and George Wasilewski (deceased)

Survived by sons Frank (Jo), Robert, daughter Karen Jean Jacome (Tavis); 6 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren. Pre-deceased, wife Jean, son George, grandson Georgie Wasilewski.

Editor-Publisher Opening

Hurry! Hurry! Hurry!

For a very LIMITED TIME (or until someone steps up) we have an opening for an Editor/Publisher for the Sequoia Yacht Club Weekly Blast! They say the pen is mightier than the sword so think of the power you can wield with this position! Commodores tremble in your presence - well, maybe not. But you're always in the know about what's going on.

Seriously folks, Jeanne and I are heading to the Other Coast this Spring and will no longer be able to produce our club's newsletter.

So how important is the Blast you ask? We have over 300 subscribers and have been read on every continent (except Antartica) and in more countries than you would imagine. One week we saw opens in 8 countries and 12 states. Members afloat depend on the Blast to know what's happening with all their friends.

The online editting software we use is simple to learn and use. If you can create a Word document, you can produce the Blast. It's that easy. There's plenty of time until April to learn all the tricks and techniques you need to publish the Blast and I'm happy to spend the time guiding you through the process.

So if you're up for it, send me an email by clicking HERE and let me know you want to practice your First Admendment rights - and maybe have some fun too.
