Police and doctors team up to help most vulnerable

Did you know that a health crisis requiring a trip to Emergency (ER) may include being shackled and escorted by police?  That’s what can happen when it is a mental health crisis that occurs in public, usually with vulnerable populations, such as the homeless.  Recognizing this issue, Dr. Matthew Chow, a psychiatrist with Providence Health teamed with Inspector Howard Tran of the Vancouver Police Department to determine a better response and treatment approach.

Enhanced recovery is gaining momentum

For more than a year, 11 BC surgical sites from all health authorities worked together as the BC Enhanced Recovery Collaborative to improve patient recovery after colorectal surgery by implementing 21 evidence-based processes of care. Compliance to these processes resulted in reducing complication rates from 32% to 22% and shortening hospital stays by two days without affecting readmission rates.

Graduation of FH Physician Quality Regional Safety Team

The first cohort of the Fraser Health Physician Quality Regional Safety (PQRS) Team of ten physicians graduated on June 1, 2016. The PQRST program is equivalent to IHI standards, with 13 face-to-face full day sessions spread throughout the year; physicians worked on their own QI activities to enhance patient care; promoted QI within their departments and mentored other physicians. The second cohort of Fraser Health PQRST will commence in September 2016. If you are a physician working in Fraser Health and would like more information, please contact Angela Tecson at angela.tecson@fraserhealth.ca.

Optimize Your EMRs

Doctors can now access simple and useful Practice Support Program (PSP) screening and diagnostic tools in their EMRs. PSP has partnered with EMR vendors to provide clinical, patient, and community resources. These specialized tools help improve identification of patients with often under-diagnosed conditions such as chronic pain, adult mental health, child and youth mental health, heart failure, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder. The free EMR tools make ongoing patient care easier by linking to patient registries, which simplifies the scheduling of recall appointments and periodic testing. For more information, visit the Practice Support Program .
