7th CEP conference for Directors General in Probation
On the 16th until the 17th of November 2017 CEP will organise its 7th conference for Directors General in Probation, this time taking place in Brussels, Belgium. The event will be hosted by the French-speaking DG Houses of Justice (Wallonia-Brussels Federation).
CEP and EuroPris workshop on Mental Health in Prison and Probation
The Confederation of European Probation (CEP) and Europris will organise a 1,5 day workshop on the 6th and 7th of December the theme of the workshop is Mental Health issues in Prison and Probation. The workshop is kindly hosted by the Irish Probation Service in Dublin.

JUSTICE TRENDS: a new magazine on the market
|
|
This month a new magazine entered the market of justice themed magazines, JUSTICE TRENDS. After years of preparation, a printed version was handed to editor-in-chief Pedro das Neves by the Portuguese prime minister. A couple of years ago Pedro das Neves realised that there was a gap in the market of justice themed magazines. He decided to act on his finding and right now, a couple of years later, the first edition is published with great success.

Access for foreign offenders to non-custodial sanctions
The over-representation of foreign nationals in many European prison services is well known.There is no lack of explanations put forward for this situation, mostly conjecture and speculation. What has received limited attention and less action is how much this disproportionality may be down to non-custodial, community based sanctions, not being used as alternatives to prison sentences for foreign offenders. My hypothesis is that foreign offenders do not receive equal access to community sanctions which, if valid, poses important questions and challenges for probation services in Europe to address and rectify.

Professionalising probation in Estonia

The start of the Estonian probation supervision dates back to 1920, however the current supervision system started to function on the 1st of May 1998.

An update on the FORINER project: education for foreign national prisoners
|
|
The FORINER project, which was launched on the 1st of January 2016, was initiated to provide EU foreign national inmates in EU prisons with access to qualitative, low threshold, certified learning opportunities provided by home institutions but received by the inmate in an EU foreign prison. The FORINER project will come to an end in December this year. Project Coordinator Bianca Durkovics gives us an update on how the project has developed this far.

Book: 'Women in Prison: The Bangkok Rules and Beyond'
In 2014, the IPPF (International Penal and Penitentiary Foundation) initiated a global research project on women in prison. Seven authorities in the field of women in prison were asked to write an article on the topic. Furthermore, representatives from 23 countries were asked to fill out a questionnaire on women in prison.
Both the seven thematic articles and the 23 national reports were published in the book 'Woman in Prison: the Bangkok Rules and Beyond' written by Piet Hein van Kempen and Maartje Krabbe.
