Social Notes from Vice Commodore Rick...

Ahoy Sequoia!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

Wow! The Holiday Spirit is alive and well in your Yacht Club!

Friday night's DID was a highlight of the season. We enjoyed Lina's festive holiday dinner and then gathered around the fire and lifted our voices in a lively Christmas Carl sing-a-long. The music was lead by Secretary Robin Webers and Bob Hughes mom, Jo Hughes. She led us through the standards with her beautiful piano accompaniment. It was a great time! Thank you Jo! Thanks to everyone who brought extra coats to the club for our "Charity of the forgetful" coat donation. We donated the club's abandoned coats and the coats that were dropped at the club to the local Maple St Shelter. These 30 coats will go directly to those at the shelter who are the most in need!

The Maple Street Shelter is very near the club and serves our community's most needy. If you missed the deadline but would still like to donate you can contact them at:

Thank You Sequoia!

From the Desk of the Commodore...

Happy Holidays!

As this is blasted out you will probably be gathered in your living rooms playing with your new toys whether they be boating gear, new flat screen televisions or other goodies.  I sincerely hope you are enjoying them.  I further hope that you are surrounded by family and loved ones and great food and the warmth of familiar surroundings and that your travels to and from all these places are safe and speedy this season.

But soon the presents will all be opened, the gadgets assembled (no need for instructions here…), aunt so-and-so’s fruit cake consumed and the wrappings appropriately recycled.   What then?  How about bowling?  Yes, exercise!  Please consider joining Sue and me for bowling at the Bel Mateo Bowl (www.belmateobowl.com) in San Mateo at 3:10 pm on Sunday December 28, 2014.

Okay, … I’ve exercised…what now?  Well consider this – how about a year-end financial gift to one of several of Sequoia Yacht Club’s affiliated organizations?  It is very easy.  I am speaking of the PYSF, Sea Scouts and Mariner Scouts and our own Sequoia Junior Sailing Program.  Here are some websites for your consideration:

Support PYSF

Ahoy Sequoia Yacht Club Members,

Happy Holidays! With 2014 coming to a close, we hope you will join us in showing support for our neighbor, the Peninsula Youth Sailing Foundation. These youth sailors are all members of our Sequoia Yacht Club. Your tax deductible gift this year can help provide opportunities for kids to learn and compete in the world of sailing. Youth sailing is at an all time high and PYSF needs to purchase additional boats and equipment so all the kids interested in participating can sail. In addition they have outgrown the original donated facility and are building a new Sailing Center.

PYSF is a 501c3 non-profit foundation that relies on the generosity of the community to ‘stay afloat.’ Checks can be mailed to: PYSF, PO Box 620866, Woodside CA 94062-0866; or you can donate online at www.pysf.us/fdonate. Gifts of all sizes make an impact, and demonstrate your support for youth sailing.

Happy holidays,

- Larry Mayne

Foto Fun

Here's a collection of photos taken by Sheila Jones from the DID and Holiday Sing-a-long last Friday. There are going to be a lot of very happy little boys and girls out there today!

Lots of bikes ready to go!

And our Redwood City Fire Department ready to load them up to deliver them to Toys-for-Tots.

Taking them to the truck...

With club members helping out...

Some members having more fun than others...

But filling the truck to overflowing!

Changing of the Guard at the Blast!

The time is drawing near for Jeanne and me to move to the East Coast. We'll be leaving around the first of March and there's many things to take care of before we head out. So we'll be giving up the editing of the Weekly Blast starting with the new year. This is our last issue.

It's been demanding at times and we certainly learned a lot about web publishing along the way. We probably won't miss the 2 AM wrap ups during beer can season. But we will miss the immediacy of knowing just about everything that's going on in our beloved club. And all-in-all we've really enjoyed the labor of publishing every Thursday.

For the next couple of issues I'll be helping Joseph Curtis who has stepped up to take on the role as Editor. Joseph is a past (2011) Commodore and owner of Timbuktu. I know you'll all enjoy working with him to keep the Blast alive and well. As always, you can communicate with the Blast editor by sending your emails to blast@sequoiayc.org.

So, thank you for the opportunity to serve you this past year and keep those articles and photos coming in to your Blast!

Sincerely,

- Byron Jacobs
 Editor and 2010 Past Commodore
