NTES Celebrates WOW Day across the Territory

20 May 2025

Territorians will celebrate WOW Day (Wear Orange Wednesday) tomorrow as part of National Volunteer Week. WOW Day is dedicated to recognising and thanking the incredible volunteers of the Northern Territory Emergency Service (NTES).

This year’s WOW Day holds special significance as NTES commemorates 50 years of service to the Northern Territory community, since its formation in the wake of Cyclone Tracy in 1974. From humble beginnings to now being a critical frontline response team for cyclones, floods and severe weather events, NTES volunteers remain a cornerstone of disaster readiness and community safety.

Chief Officer NT Emergency Service Wayne Snell, said WOW Day is a powerful reminder of the dedication and courage shown by volunteers to support their neighbours, their street, their town, their Territory.

“Our fiftieth anniversary is not just about looking back, but celebrating the selfless commitment our volunteers show today and every day. NTES is built on community spirit, and we’re proud to say that our volunteers will be there when it matters most.”

Community Engagement Officer Marie Baptista, reflected on the importance of giving back.

“Being part of NTES means stepping up when your community needs you. It’s a role that comes with challenges, but also a great sense of pride and purpose. Knowing we make a difference, that’s why we keep showing up.”

To mark the day, Territorians are encouraged to wear orange, host orange-themed morning teas, and send letters of kindness to thank NTES volunteers for their service.

Messages can be emailed to ntes@nt.gov.au and will be included in a celebratory video.
