There is a complex network of underground services that need to be protected or relocated throughout the project area. Directional drilling (pictured) is being used to install the majority of new underground pipelines and cables.

What happened in February

Last month work continued around the Maunganui-Girven intersection and along State Highways 2 and 29A, near Baypark.

This work included:

  • Installation of drainage under SH2 between Matapihi Road and Bayfair Shopping Centre.
  • Progressing earthworks for the new northbound on and off ramps at the Maunganui-Girven intersection and new SH29A roundabout in preparation for pavement works.
  • Removal of the median concrete barriers along SH29A.
  • Power, gas and sewer relocation works continuing along SH29A and SH2.
  • Locating and protecting underground services and continuing removal of vegetation.

A 50km/h temporary speed restriction is in place throughout the site for the duration of the project for the safety of drivers and their passengers, and also for the people working on the project. Please take care driving through the site.

The works around Harris Street and Bayfair Shopping Centre are part of the Bayfair expansion and not related to this project.

Construction work can generate varying noise and vibration levels depending on a number of factors. As earthworks continue along SH2 (pictured) we carry out regular monitoring to ensure we’re operating within approved levels that are in place to protect property and residents.

What to expect during March

During March the focus will continue around the Maunganui-Girven intersection and State Highways 2 and 29A.

You can expect:

  • Completion of a new stormwater drain under SH2, with remaining works occurring in the verge next to Bayfair Shopping Centre.
  • Construction of a trial embankment in the empty sections along Maunganui Road, to replicate what the permanent embankment will do to the existing ground. This will inform the construction team on how the soil below behaves and confirm settlement duration.
  • Earthworks will begin along Matapihi Road and progress will continue on the new northbound on and off ramps at the Maunganui-Girven intersection in preparation for pavement works.
  • The new SH29A roundabout will start taking shape as we continue to import pumice fill to the site.
  • Service relocation works will continue with the installation of the new gas line in the south, power along Truman Lane and completion of the new sewer line connections along SH2, near the Maunganui-Girven intersection.

Historical discoveries

We are working closely with local iwi while earthworks are underway. Cultural monitors are assisting the construction team in the event material of potential historic interest is uncovered. If this happens, work in the area is stopped until an archaeologist has assessed the area (pictured).

So far nothing of significance has been found.

Whether work is happening during the day or night, please keep to the 50km/h temporary speed restriction. This is for the safety of drivers and their passengers, as well as for the people working on the project and those living along Maunganui Road.

Night works

While the majority of construction work will take place during the day, there are times we need to work at night. Night work takes place when we are unable to carry out a specific task safely during the day, or there are traffic or service requirements we need to meet. Where a task is close to live traffic, temporary road or lane closures may be required to keep our crews safe. You can find the planned traffic closures for the week under the Traffic Notices tab on the website: www.nzta.govt.nz/baylink
