INI NEWS BULLETIN
May 2018

Dear friends, associates and supporters of INI,

Welcome to the next edition of our monthly e-bulletins. This time around we have five main stories: three looking at the current and future happenings here at the Institute, and two recapping recent events.

Remember that you can follow INI online via our Facebook page, Twitter feed and Instagram account. You can also keep tabs on our "This Week's Seminars" page - where you will find a regularly updated schedule of all the talks delivered here, as well as live stream links too.

1. UPDATE: Current and future programmes at INI

The Institute's two current programmes, "Uncertainty quantification for complex systems: theory and methodologies" and "Statistical Scalability" will both reach the end of their six-month schedules on 29 June.

There is, however, still one major workshop due to run: "STSW04 - Future challenges in statistical scalability" (25-29 June), with the great majority of talks due to be streamed live on newton.ac.uk.

Full details of all eight workshops held across both programmes can be found online (STS workshops, UNQ workshops) with nearly every talk given being recorded and available to view on demand.

As of May 2018 the INI website currently hosts 7,307 videos, amounting to over 40 terabytes of data and between them boasting over three million views. This makes our video repository the largest library of publicly-accessible media within the University of Cambridge by some margin.

In the second half of 2018, INI will welcome two more programmes to the building: "Homotopy harnessing higher structures" (HHH, 2 July) and "Scaling limits, rough paths, quantum field theory" (SRQ, 3 September). Applications for the six of the seven accompanying workshops are currently open, and we would encourage booking places as soon as possible.

2. VIDEO: Professor Peter Buhlmann previews Rothschild Lecture (22 June 2018)

Thanks to the generous support of NM Rothschild & Sons, every INI programme is able to host a keynote seminar by a pre-eminent mathematician in its field. The UNQ programme's Professor Andrew Stuart was highlighted in our previous bulletin, and now it is the turn of STS's Professor Peter Buhlmann.

As explained in this short interview, Professor Buhlmann's talk will focus on heterogeneity in large scale data. The lecture will take place on 22 June 2018 at INI. More details to follow.

3. NEWS: Vice-Chancellor visits INI (23 April 2018)

On Monday 23 April 2018 the Institute was honoured to welcome University of Cambridge Vice-Chancellor Stephen Toope for a tour of INI and TGM's facilities, as well as the opportunity to meet key staff.

Having taken over from previous V-C Sir Leszek Borysiewicz in October 2017, Toope is now just six months into his tenure as head of the University of Cambridge. The afternoon visit therefore proved the perfect opportunity for INI Director David Abrahams (above, right) to highlight the exciting and vital nature of the research undertaken here and to discuss ways in which further cross-institutional collaboration could take it to even greater heights.

The staff of INI would like to thank Vice-Chancellor Toope once again for joining them at the Institute, and look forward with great excitement to the future.

4. REMINDER: UK Fluids Network meeting - last chance to register (29-30 August 2018)

There is now just over one week left to register for "Fluid mechanics of cleaning and decontamination", an exciting meeting of the UK Fluids Network Special Interest Group.

From the organisers: "Cleaning and decontamination operations constitute complex multiphase flow problems. Applications range from domestic and industrial cleaning to removal of hazardous chemical, biological, radioactive or nuclear materials. This SIG will forge a cross-disciplinary community spanning theoretical and experimental researchers, practitioners and government agencies to develop comprehensive approaches to optimizing these processes."

5. REPORT: LMS Women in Maths Days (30 April / 1 May 2018)

On 30 April - 1 May, INI hosted the LMS Women in Mathematics Day, an annual event supported by the London Mathematical Society.

This well-attended event featured talks from eminent mathematicians including Catherine Powell (Manchester), Nilanjana Datta (Cambridge), Masoumeh Dashti (Sussex), Colva Roney-Douglas (St Andrews) and Anne Davis (Cambridge) on topics ranging from Euler systems to group theory, and from academic application processes to attitudes to gender in the workplace.

INI would like to thank all of the speakers and participants for such an inspiring two days of discussion, and look forward to all such future events. A gallery of images from the meeting follows.
