THANK YOU to all of the parents who have actively engaged in your child's education by staying informed and keeping in communication with the school. We truly appreciate your dedication and support.

We will be sending out periodic newsletters over the summer with important information, as well as updating the website and sending out voice blasts. Important documents will be posted online, as well as important summer and back to school information. Please continue to stay informed and check in with us.

What to Expect on the Last Day

On the last day of school, your child will be learning about our Positive Behavior program from their new teachers, as well as receiving important documents with information the families will need. Please look through your child's materials for these items:

  • PBIS Parent letter
  • Summer reading assignment
  • Barnard Fee letter
  • Supply list
  • Report Card

Please review all of these documents thoroughly, as some changes have been made in order to adjust to new budgeting as well as school wide initiatves. All of these items will be available for downloading from the website this summer.

What is the "Summer Slide"? How to Avoid it.

Summer learning loss is real and recognized by teachers. Studies show that students who are not engaged in continual learning and enrichment over the summer forget or “lose” some skills, knowledge or grade-level equivalency.

Learning over the summer has long-term benefits.  Research shows that kids who keep learning over the summer will be more successful in the long run, often having higher achievement, graduation, and college acceptance rates than students who give in to the "summer slide" or cease all learning activity. The Chicago Tribune just recently addressed this subject in their June 12th issue. Click here for the article.

Every Barnard student will receive a summer reading assignment from their new homeroom teachers. This is an important contributor to your child's success in the upcoming school year. Also, on our website there are several links to many learning activities throughout the city. We encourage all families to take advantage of these opportunities and help your child avoid the "summer slide".

Barnard 8th Graders Commence new Journey

Tuesday, June 11, we bid farewell to our Barnard class of 2013. Our gallery highlights some of the most memorable moments as we said goodbye to our wonderful 8th graders, some of whom attended Barnard for 9 years! Many students were awarded for their outstanding achievements, including two standouts pictured on the left - Kaitlyn Coleman, Salutatorian and Zamora Gaston, Valedictorian.  Click here to see the gallery of this event.

"Learn Local" Continues Through the Summer

Our drive to promote our wonderful school to families in the local Barnard attendance area continues! Throughout the summer, we will be highlighting Barnard community members on posters throughout the neighborhood - in local businesses and high-visibility locations.

Our first "poster child" is Zamora Gaston, class of 2013. Her family's commitment to Barnard, and her drive for excellence are qualities that deserve our attention. We look forward to highlighting more Barnard standouts in the upcoming months.

In the meantime, we appreciate your desire to help. If you would like to submit a testimonial quote about your experience at Barnard, or are willing to help distribute flyers or put up a lawn sign, please email Mrs. Burns.

Pre-K Celebrates!

Ms. Hosman, Ms. Scott, and our littlest Barnard learners have been celebrating the end of a very productive school year!  On Thursday,  June 13th, Pre-K students and their families had a fun filled afternoon of BBQ and games.

Our brilliant Pre-K-ers then capped off their exceptional year with a Celebration Presentation on Friday, June 14th.
