QORF eNews May 2018 No Images? Click here Lessons to be learned from camp crisisIf you follow the news, you are likely to be aware a student from Brisbane Marist College was seriously injured while participating in a high ropes course last week. The activity was part of a four-day school camp at Woodford. The student was participating in the Challenge Ropes Course when he fell and became entangled in the safety ropes, causing him to lose consciousness. The teenager was evacuated to Brisbane where he was placed in intensive care at Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital. While the student has made an inspiring recovery, and is now resting at home with his family after being discharged yesterday, the camp operator involved is determined to learn whatever lessons possible from the serious incident and is undertaking a full investigation to understand how this accident occurred. The camp operator has informed us that in their 20 years of operation there has never been an incident on the high ropes course. However, they too are determined to understand the elements that played out fully, and do whatever is required, to prevent something like this ever happening again. In addition to this, QORF has also engaged the services of an independent expert to see if any improvements or recommendations can be made. QORF would like to voice its heartfelt thanks to all the medical professionals who carefully managed the student’s path back to wellness. We would also like to acknowledge the incredible response and support from our industry who acted swiftly, decisively and positively to this serious incident.

See in QORF SHOP UPLOADS UpdateWith the new UPLOADS app launching on August 1st, QORF recommends that, as part of their safety management activities, organisations report any incidents (including near misses) they experience. This will help us understand the contributory factors involved and to develop appropriate interventions to prevent future incidents. UPLOADS is an incident reporting and analysis system that enables Australian organisations to report and analyse incidents both for their own use and to contribute to the collective knowledge of the sector via the UPLOADS National Dataset. A key finding from analyses of UPLOADS data is that minor incidents appear to have similar causal patterns as major incidents. The more organisations reporting incidents through UPLOADS, the greater our ability to understand and prevent incidents will be.
