HORSE OWNERS REMINDED TO BE AWARE OF HENDRA VIRUS RISK

While the risk of Hendra virus occurring in Western Australia is low, horse owners need to remain vigilant for the signs of the disease as it is so dangerous when it occurs.
Hendra virus is a fatal disease of horses caused by horse contact with the secretions of flying foxes (fruit bats) that carry the virus. People who have close contact with infected horses, including vets, may also become infected and can die from the disease.

The disease occurs in Queensland and NSW, and with regular movements back and forth across Australia for equestrian events, your horses can potentially be exposed to horses incubating the disease during competitions.

Be aware that flying foxes in northern WA have been found to carry the virus and so have the potential to infect horses.

STATE EQUESTRIAN CENTRE - NEWS

15/08/2019

Equestrian Western Australia policy is that all dogs on the State Equestrian Centre grounds must be on a lead and under control. Anyone entering the SEC must comply with the SEC terms and conditions of entry, these are designed to protect all SEC patrons with the dogs on lead policy ensuring that loose dogs do not cause harm to SEC patrons or horses.

We understand that some of our patrons wish to attend the SEC with their dogs, to assist us to maintain the policy of allowing dogs at the SEC we kindly ask that all dogs remain on a lead. We have had several incidents involving dogs not on a lead causing injury to horses and riders over the years, and we require your assistance to protect all SEC patrons.

It is also essential that all riders that ride at the SEC are registered to do so. EWA has promoted the new SEC Park and Ride booking that is free of charge if you just come down for a ride or if you would like to book an arena or jump the cross country jumps a booking with a fee is required.

Please help us to ensure that dogs can remain welcome at the SEC.

WRAP-UP: ROD BROWN WA CLINIC

WA had the opportunity to attend another 3 day clinic with esteemed coach Rod Brown (EA Level 3 Jumping).

EA again funded Rods journey to Perth as part of the HP State Funding Program providing lessons at no cost to the eventing squad riders and with the financial assistance from EWA to heavily subsidize the Jumping squad’s lessons. With this opportunity provided, all squad riders were able to ride not only their squad horse, but another promising super star waiting in the wings to further their equestrian development toward National Squads. The quality of our states riders has improved over the 2 years since this funding has been in place.

Friday was the day that all La Noir Saddleworld Jumping squad riders were able to take up the opportunity to ride and be coachedby Rod. It was unfortunate that the plane was late due to heavy fog in the morning, so finally started the clinic at midday. Twelve squad
riders took up this fantastic opportunity to be fine-tuned for the weekend’s event held with WASJA. Feedback was very positive with riders wanting requesting future clinics with Rod and other visiting EA Coaches.
