Welcome to our December 2022 NewsletterSafer Communities, Safer Schools
Engineered Learning are proud to be working in partnership with Derby City Council to deliver an innovative project that sees young people designing and creating the metal infrastructure for the communities they live in, whilst developing engineering skills in our authentic workshop. West Park School, City of Derby Academy, Chellaston Academdy, Alvaston Moor Academy and Bemrose School were all invited to take part and their students will be developing skills in the use of drilling equipment, angle grinders, MIG/MMA welding processes, thermal cutting using oxy/fuel gas and hand-held/CNC Plasma cutting equipment, leading to an NCFE Accredited Level One Award in Industry Specific Engineering Skills. When young people manufacture for their community, they are more invested in it and the proven social return is less anti-social behaviour and vandalism. The project also gives young people the skills employers are looking for, so it helps to plug the gap in the current shortage of skilled welders as well as ensuring far-reaching economic and social benefits to the wider community. Engineered Racing Students Building Formula Vee
Students at Engineered Racing are very engaged with an exciting new project developed by our tutors. They are building a Formula Vee vehicle, which is an open wheel, single-seater junior motor racing formula vehicle. Some of the motor racing greats started off in Formula Vee, such as Niki Lauda, Emerson Fittipaldi, Nelson Piquet and Keke Rosberg. This great project empowers students to develop across a range of skills including motor vehicle engineering and team working skills. The project has also drawn in skills development from Engineered Learning such as welding and its a great way for current Year 10 students to follow a progression route into Fabrication and Welding in Year 11, enabling them to build a skills base that's very attractive to employers and one not normally seen in a school leaver. We have a limited number of spaces still available at Engineered Racing - please either email admin@engineeredlearning.co.uk or call 01332 955562 Derbyshire Anti-Violence Campaign
Derbyshire Constabulary have been asking community groups to make bees in support of its Anti-Violence Campaign, and our students helped to create this awesome plasma-cut bee made from steel. We firmly believe that supporting young people to build a positive view of our police force is a very important step towards building cohesive communities that are safe for all. See Derbyshire Constabulary's video below for more information about the project . About usWe are a leading alternative education provider with a proven track record of demonstrating measurable improvements in classroom behaviour, working with schools and young people aged 14 to 16 since 2013. We specialise in working with any student who needs support outside the mainstream curriculum such as those at risk of exclusion and those with special educational needs. Our qualified specialist staff, support and empower young people to gain experience, training, and NCFE accredited awards in Welding, Fabrication, and Motor Vehicle Engineering in our authentic workshops based in Derby where we manufacture for industry, including East Midlands Rail and Derby City Council and we were actively involved in Derby’s bid to become the home of Great British Rail! Our students can reap the mental health and wellbeing benefits that working with their hands offers, whilst engaging with other students, forming friendships, and developing team-working and social skills along the way. Future pathways include further education, apprenticeships, and the workplace, where the hands-on skills gained with us are in demand , with employers now coming directly to Engineered Learning - there’s currently a shortage of some 40,000 welders in the UK – a fully qualified and experienced welder can earn £50,000 pa upwards, undoubtedly making engineering a career choice worth pursuing. |
