The films from Resound Studio Recordings 2014, produced by RNZ Concert, have been published. These films cover the re-recording of existing chamber music works unsuitable for broadcasting. The choral works will be published shortly through our Facebook page.

Gillian Bibby

Composer, teacher and musicologist Gillian Bibby celebrated her 70th birthday in July 2015 and Resound has published an extensive resource, including interviews with the composer and videos of performances of the birthday concert.

 

SOUNZ Contemporary Award
Once again congratulations to Salina Fisher, winner of the 2016 SOUNZ Contemporary Award with Rainphase. Salina (b.1993) is the youngest ever winner of the SOUNZ Contemporary Award. Her orchestral work Rainphase is inspired by rain.

New Zealand Music Awards
Congratulations to Anthony Ritchie & Ross Harris, Kenneth Young and wind quintet Zephyr, whose albums have been nominated for the Best Classical Album in this year's NZ Music Awards. All nominated albums are available on our website.

This year’s Lilburn Lecture at the National Library will be delivered by Jenny McLeod, on 2 November. She will discuss her work and experiences in relation to her friend Lilburn's manifestos of New Zealand musical identity, A Search for Tradition and A Search for a Language.

SOUNZ is calling for scores from New Zealand composers for the SMCO Composer Project 2017, a collaboration between St Matthews Chamber Orchestra, CANZ and SOUNZ. The project aims to encourage NZ composers at all career stages to write high quality works for non-professional orchestras.

National Youth Jazz Competition

Registrations are now open for the 40th National Youth Jazz Competition, held over Easter 2017. You can register online via the National Jazz Festival website.
SOUNZ will again provide an award for the Best Performance of a New Zealand Composition.

 

The Screen Composers Guild of NZ in association with SOUNZ, organised another workshop for screen composers this month. Guest composer John Psathas gave a talk on his composing career and some of his recent projects, including No Man’s Land.

The Screen composers’ workshops are open to composers at all levels and provide an opportunity to make connections with other members of our composing community.

SOUNZ and SCGNZ have offered two events this year and the partnership will continue in the future.

 

NZ music premieres

APO’s Composer-in-Residence Karlo Margetić's new work, Mainspring, premieres on 3 November.

New NZTrio commission by Juliet Palmer, Vermillion Songs, premieres on 13 November.
