Senator Sinclair passed away Nov. 4, 2024, at the age of 73. Known within the Indigenous community as Mazina Giizhik (the One Who Speaks of Pictures in the Sky), he was a respected Anishinaabe leader, beloved husband and father. Senator Sinclair was Manitoba’s first Indigenous judge, Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and served as a Manitoba Senator. Senator Sinclair devoted his life to justice and reconciliation for Indigenous peoples. In his role as Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, he travelled across Turtle Island (Canada) gathering the life experiences from over 6500 survivors of residential schools. These accounts led to the 94 Calls to Action, creating a framework for difficult conversations about the severe impact of colonialism and residential schools. We encourage everyone to embrace these actions, working together to create a path of healing going forward. Saddened by this profound loss, we extend our sincerest condolences to the family of the Honourable Murray Sinclair, and everyone who is mourning his loss." Media contactDaryl Barnhart |
