Regent College - Your child loving learning! No Images? Click here TERM 3 Dear College families, Welcome to this Week 8 edition of the Regent Digest. Thank you to families for accomodating the postponed inter-house athletics carnival, last Friday. I think you'd agree, it would not have been much fun down at Raphael Park in the wind and rain. As communicated, the rescheduled date for the carnival is Friday 15th September. I pray you have a blessed week! Derek Nicholls. Principal.
NAPLAN RESULTS 2017 Overall, both the Year 3 and Year 5 NAPLAN results for 2017 are pleasing. In each of the graphs below, Regent College is represented by the GREEN dot. As can be quickly noted, Regent College has performed well against National, State and Similar school score averages. TABLE 1 - YEAR 3 As can be seen in Table 1 below, the Regent Year 3 group results exceed the National and State results in all areas, and this pattern is also seen when comparing Regent College to results from "Similar schools" (except in grammar and punctuation). *Similar schools - a group of up to 60 schools across Australia with students from statistically similar backgrounds. An average NAPLAN result is calculated for these 60 schools to enable comparison with the selected school’s own NAPLAN results. TABLE 2 - YEAR 5 As can be seen in Table 2 below, the Regent Year 5 group results exceed the National, State and Similar schools' results, in all areas. Table 1&2 Graph information provided by the Association of Independent Schools Western Australia (AISWA). Families are reminded that NAPLAN testing is a single snapshot of student achievement and does not necessarily capture an individual student's true strengths or weaknesses. Parents should always monitor their child's learning and progress through regular conversations with the their child and the classroom teacher. STAFF LEARNING Last fortnight, teachers participated in a workshop session with Dr. Natalie Leitao, Education Consultant from Christian Schools Australia. A key focus of the session was exploring 'Christian Worldview', with an emphasis on how our worldview informs us about identity and our purpose, and shapes our thinking and our behaviour. Teachers also recently participated in a workshop session with Kristin Humphreys, Mathematics Consultant from the Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia (AISWA). The focus of this session was problem solving. One key point from this session was that problem solving is about seeking solutions, not just memorising procedures. Thank you to both Natalie and Kristin for facilitating these sessions. College staff regularly participate in Professional Learning which encourages self-reflection and the promotion of improved practice. This week staff will participate in a two-hour workshop focusing on Code of Conduct, which includes a special focus on the identification and safeguarding of students from grooming behaviours. Thank you, in anticipation, to Kate Standard - Inclusive Education Consultant from AISWA. KINDERGARTEN 1,2&3 This term the Kindergarten children have been exploring the topic, 'Around the World'. As we started talking, we became increasingly curious about our 'corner' of the world. We decided to explore outside and around our local community. Recently, we discovered an underpass and the children were eager to find out where it went. They were excited when they realized there was a river, bridges and the city on the other side. Once we returned, our conversations all turned to what we could do next down by the river; perhaps a picnic, or an expedition or bug catching? Mrs Huxley and Mrs Stein PRE-PRIMARY Pre-Primary and Kindergarten students participated in a wonderful morning celebrating Father’s Day, on Friday, with their dads. The students shared a breakfast date with their daddy and enjoyed some activities throughout the classrooms; including blocks, construction, painting, woodwork, kinetic sand and ball games on the oval. It was a super turnout and it was obvious that the children all loved spending special time with dad! Happy Father’s Day to all the wonderful dads. We hope you enjoyed your weekend! Miss Shaw and Miss Baker CLASS 1.1 Over the last few weeks we have been busy in Year 1! In Mathematics, we have learnt about Australian coins, and practised partitioning numbers using place value with lots of fun games and activities. In History, we have been learning about old-fashioned appliances, and how things were different in the olden days. We enjoyed creating a drama, using mime to compare olden days to present day, and performing it to the class. In Writing, we have continued to add many recipes to our recipe books! We have enjoyed making smoothies, porridge and fairy bread, to name a few. Miss Masters CLASS 1/2 In English, we have been learning how different people communicate. We have looked at electronic books (e-books), listened to audio books and even tried writing and reading Braille. We wrote our names in Braille and quickly discovered it is quite hard to read by touch. In Science, we are looking at the water cycle and the seasons. In Mathematics, the Year 1 students have learnt how to identify, describe and order Australian coins. The Year 2 students have been learning about multiplication and how to make groups, arrays and write repeated addition. We have enjoyed dressing up for Book Day and Italian Day. Miss Jongeling
CLASS 2.1 Bocce Recently, we thoroughly enjoyed dressing up for Italian Day and after the assembly, we all played the Italian game Bocce. We each had a turn to throw a large marble on the ground and then tried to throw our Bocce ball as close as we could to the marble. We also had time to play soccer or netta. Japanese Kites In guided reading, we read an information report on Japanese kites. The smallest kites, 4 to 6 cm high or even smaller, are called miniatures. They may be made in the shapes of insects, birds, animals and heroes. We made our own miniature kites. We have begun making paper kites using paper bags and straws for the frame. When completed, we will fly them outside. Mrs Jenkins CLASS 3.1 Book Week was an exciting time for everyone and particularly for Year 3.1 on Friday. We were very blessed to have had the opportunity to go the the Victoria Park Library and listen to Justin D’Ath, author of the Mission Fox series and 44 other books. Mrs Klenner has been reading his book, ‘Astrid Spark, Fixologist’, in our weekly library visits and we’ve been borrowing others to read at home. We enjoyed discovering that one of Justin’s books is titled Cooper. So it was quite special for Cooper Heather and Justin to have their photo taken together. Three boys, Ben, Terry and Joshua, have been writing their own graphic novel so they were keen to share it with Justin. He was pleased to find out that we have several keen writers in our class and encouraged us to write our own adventure stories. It seems he has inspired all of us to read, write and illustrate more. In the words of one student’s reflection… “I think all that walking was worth it to see someone who is a good writer. That was a fun excursion.” Mrs Johnston and Mrs Ellis CLASS 4.1 In Civics, we have been learning about the 3 levels of Government in Australia and we were asked to show these 3 levels in an interesting and creative way. In English, we read a book titled Fox by Margaret Wild and Ron Brooks. It is a breathtaking story of friendship, love, risk and betrayal. We thought it ended as a cliff hanger, and so we wrote our own endings... In Mathematics, we made these posters to show what we know about fractions! Our annual Italian Day is always greatly anticipated as we love tucking into some gelato! Mrs Innes CLASS 5/6 In River Rangers, the students walked down to the river to observe the water and do a Visual Site Assessment of the Swan River. The students observed quite a bit of wildlife and learnt some history of the area. In Maths students have used Triple Beam Balance scales, kitchen and bathroom scales. Students estimated and measured a variety of classroom objects and practised using the scales to accurately read the mass of each object. Students made conversions between grams, kilograms and tonnes. The Year Five and Six class went to the Observatory last Friday and they viewed Jupiter, Saturn, the Milky Way, the Jewel Box and many other interesting stars, through some very powerful telescopes. They then went back to the school for a sleep over and slept in the tents they put up. It was a wonderful opportunity to see God’s Universe and where the Earth fits into it all. Mrs Lotsos and Mrs Wilkinson PHYSICAL EDUCATION This Friday (8th of September), Regent College will be taking a team of students from Year 2-6 to the WACSSA Interschool Primary Cross Country Carnival. The boys and girls who finished in the top 3 (pictured) at the Regent College House Cross country carnival will be competing against other Christian schools at Thomas Moore Park in Medina. The students have been training hard and we trust they will do well on the day. Mrs French
LANGUAGES - Italian Making Pasta To compliment the Food theme in Miss Masters' class, the Year 1's help make home made pasta in their Italian class. Using the ingredients egg and flour and a pasta machine, the pasta was made with the help of the students, cooked and enjoyed at lunch. Signora Kerrigan MUSIC The Year 6 Students have been looking at music from different lands. Their most recent module has been the study of Celtic Music. Oppostie they are pictured dancing the Celtic Ring which is an Irish Folk Dance based on 2 Irish Jigs ‘Lannigan’s Ball’ and ‘Auntie Mary’. Our Year 4 students have been learning about Pitch and Pattern, Rhythm and Rhyme and how musical elements work together in time. They have been specifically looking at how the continuous sound of one pitch called a ‘Drone’ can be used as a simple form of harmony. Over the last couple of lessons we made our own wind instruments from PVC pipe and balloons, to get a better understanding of what a musical drone is and to discover how a wind instrument, such as a saxophone, produces a sound. Below are some pictures of the students making their instruments and enjoying the wonderful sounds coming from their creations. The kindergarten students have been learning about high and low and loud and soft sounds in music and in their environment. Pictured below, they are using puppets for pitch exploration and vocal expression and instruments for expressing loud and soft. Mrs Marshall DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES In Year 1 and Year 2, we have explored maths, coding and Beebots! A beebot is a small robotic bee which can be programmed to travel to set destinations. At first it was hard measuring the right distances and getting the coding steps right. Over a few lessons, we persisted and improved our coding and measuring to be able to accurately travel around a variety of mazes and maps. Mrs Saxton BOOK WEEK The College recently participated in a series of Book Week events, as part of the broader 'Children's Book Council of Australia', Book Week (18th-25th August). A special thanks to Miss Melanie Baker (Pre-primary teacher), for organising some enjoyable and meaningful events. One event, as already featured at the top of the Regent Digest was the Book Week Dress-up. Another daily event across the week was whole school reading out on the oval. On the final day, some of the students shared books/stories that they had written themselves. Fun was had by all! BEFORE SCHOOL CARE This term, Before School Care has been added to our Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) program. Before School Care offers a variety of activities and a healthy breakfast from 7am until school commences - 5 days a week. The children have been enjoying activities ranging from art and craft, praise and worship (singing and dancing), playing games, reading and construction. Bright faces and wide smiles show that we are delighted and ready for a new day of school! ITALIAN DAY The purpose of Italian Day, which we had on Wednesday, is to celebrate the Italian language, which the children are learning at Regent. With language learning, comes learning culture and hence, the day was made up of dressing up in Italian colours and themes, eating Italian food and gelato. The Italian assembly was presented in Italian including two praise and worship songs and a piece of drama acted out in Italian. The wonderful Regent College choir also sang in Italian, astounding everyone with their performance.
