We were very aware that this needed to be a carefully scaffolded return to school and we were not surprised to find some student unsure of which classroom they were in, juggling the complexities of equipment in and out of lockers and getting changed for PE. What was lovely was to see their smiling faces and to have the noise level in the school start to return to “normal.” We are also very aware that some students have really struggled to transition to school. I encourage parents and carers to make contact with their child’s House Leaders if you feel your child is not coping so we are able to put some additional supports in place. Next Tuesday we welcome back the students in Year 8, 9 and 10. Remote learning will cease for these year groups. Some vulnerable students may require remote learning in a modified way if they are unable to attend school. Please contact the Front Office if you believe your child may require this. ILT commenced this week and will continue next week. All school facilities, including the Canteen, will be up and running, and though we are still not able to have adults in the school, we will start to feel that things are getting back to normal. I would again like to thank all our parents for their ongoing patience as we transition back to normal schooling and for the wonderful messages of support and thanks that have been sent to myself and other staff members. This has certainly made the staff feel supported and is a testament to the wonderful parents and carers that we are lucky enough to have as part of the JPC community. I wish you all a safe and restful long weekend. Stephanie O'Meara Principal The Power of PrayerEntrustment of Australia to theImmaculate Heart of Mary, Our Lady Help of ChristiansThe power of prayer is recognised by the Bishops of Australia, who have entrusted Australia to Mary, Our Lady Help of Christians, loving care as our Patroness since 1844 and last week, they requested that the faithful in Australian pray the following Prayer of Entrustment to ask for her intercession on our behalf in this time of anxiety, fear and frustration. We look forward to all our students returning to JPC next week, and ask that you all pray these beautiful words in support of our children, especially those who may be apprehensive at this time. Jennifer Tually Leader of Learning and Wellbeing, Mission and Ministry and Ferré House In and Around JPCReconciliation Week at JPCTheme: All in this togetherOur teaching staff and students at JPC truly embraced the beginning of Reconciliation Week at JPC. The wonderful canteen team incorporated native flavours into dishes including lemon myrtle biscuits and savoury scrolls with bush tomatoes. The teachers also incorporated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, cultures, histories and 8 ways of learning into their week 15 lessons. “The Arts team created a task for the year 7’s and 9/10’s which was to choose a Dream time story image and compose a song based on how the image made you feel and what you could see within that image.” Sharon Robinson “For both my 8 French and 8 SOSE classes, we made padlet visual collages to reflect on and show our learning over the previous units.” Shaylie Maskell - (photos - 8 French learning: https://padlet.com/shayliemaskell/gmmv9jady6k8t8fw & 8 SOSE learning: https://padlet.com/shayliemaskell/ojh060k8fsoix0vt) Mr Johns held a prayer in ILT on Wednesday and had students write what Reconciliation week meant to them…. “We did the Reconciliation Sign Language in Year 9 English this morning, they loved it!” Jess Amos “We used Reconciliation Sign Language as a starter activity for the Year 8 Dance zoom lesson”. Ellie Mostyn Our Principal Mrs O’Meara bravely volunteered to partake in a live AIME's Imagi-Nation TV ’60 seconds with a Principal’ broadcast on Friday 29th, with one of our Aboriginal students, Abbey Lamb as co-host of the show! They did an amazing job! Other students to participate in the live audience were Kyan and Caprice Barnes, Tamika Keir, Owen Rymill and Mackenzie Lane. Arts up FrontThe Cinderella Show Spirit Must Go On!Week 15 marked the first of the last musical ILT lessons for 2020. Pre-COVID19, JPC was well on their way with rehearsals for Cinderella: A Pantomime, coming together as a cast every Wednesday Period 5 and after school. Unfortunately, with the postponement of the show, the rehearsal schedule was needed no more. However, the fabulous cast still have 5 weeks of allocated rehearsal time in which they can hone their performance skills. And hone they will. Wednesday’s session focused on a recap of singing and acting warm ups, followed by breathing and projection with the aim of building the confidence in ensemble work of our young performers. Having the skills to sing, dance and act is only the beginning when it comes to musical performance, as stage presence, command of the space, and the way we engage with our fellow performers is equally as important. Our young thespians were put right out of their comfort zones, encouraged to divest themselves of their inhibitions and fears when it comes to being put on the spot with their performance skills; the end result being a two part harmony verse with enough sass to outdo even the most demanding of stage divas. Well done to these students who came to the ILT space with the same enthusiasm they shared at the start of the rehearsal period – the next 5 weeks may be bitter sweet, but it will be a time to be had! Drama at JPC – Online and in the ClassroomThursday marked the end of online learning for the 9/10 Drama class. To start our online learning, we dressed up, so, it was only fitting to commemorate the final lesson in the same fashion. Students were dressed in fancy costumes, did their make-up and even created new characters – “Crazy Dog lady with little dog”. Drama students have been thoroughly engaged in their online learning tasks, taking the opportunity to investigate different areas of the Theatre Industry to further develop their understanding of the Drama world. Each week, students proudly shared successes and discussed the challenges or surprises experienced through the creation of their weekly tasks. Senior Drama have been extremely busy in the theatre over the last two weeks. In preparation for taking on the role of a director, students have been engaged with various active workshops, learning new skills and styles of technique development. This week, Year 7 had their real experience of high school Drama in the Drama room. Students have been active in their development of skills and have continued to impress with the creation of their work, from performances to masks, to narration of virtual tours, the Year 7s are upskilling! Chookas to all Drama students – it’s great to have you back! Mrs Smith – Drama teacher JPC Music ProgramOur music program is kicking off again!
