No Images? Click here The President, Professor Jane Clarke, looks back on an eventful year of ceremonial arrivals, celebratory departures and the worldwide reach of Wolfson's academic community. "As we swelter in the English summer, I reflect on my second hectic year here at Wolfson. We began in October with a new tradition — Matriculation Ceremonies. In June, we held the first of two celebratory graduation weekends to send off the undergraduates and then in July we said congratulations to our postgraduate students: PhD and Master's degrees — including a large cohort of part-time students. " > READ REFLECTIONS ON MY SECOND YEAR COLLEGE LIFEMay and June are always busy months at Wolfson, with the end of exams and Quiet Period, the May Ball, graduations, the College Garden Party, the Benefactors' Garden Party, the Mary Bevan Recital, and of course the May Bumps. If you'd like to see photos of these events (and maybe spot yourself), check our Flickr and Facebook accounts. If you want to keep up with events at College, sign up for our weekly e-newsletter What's on at Wolfson, which goes out each Monday during term with details of all the events, from singing to seminars to salsa! Tszwai So in ConversationFriends and Fellows were present last month for the opening of a very special exhibition in the Combination Room. Following on from the recent Joseph Joseph exhibition — which also displayed the work of an alumnus — was Tszwai So's Emotional Architecture: transforming responses to space. You can watch his conversation with Hugh Pearman, editor of the RIBA Journal. The exhibition continues until 22 September. Wolfson College — first choice for postgradsPhD student Georges Quist started his PhD in Development Studies in Michaelmas Term, but right from the beginning he said Wolfson felt like home. In this short video, he explains why he thinks all postgraduates should make Wolfson their first choice when applying to Cambridge. STUDENTS in the SPOTLIGHTOutstanding Awards for Wolfson Students Sharon Walker (PhD, Education) and Ibrahim (Ibz) Mohammed (HSPS) were recognised in the category of Inclusive Practices in the newly created awards established by the Centre for Teaching and Learning. Congratulations to them both. OCR RefurbishmentIn another successful student-led renovation project, recent Architecture graduate Max Mulvany has transformed the Old Combination Room into a warm and welcoming space for all. Working with Librarian Meg Westbury, Max scoured auction sites for affordable items true to the Arts & Crafts origins of the room. Max has certainly left his mark on Wolfson, as he was also President of last year's May Ball and was instrumental in the renovation of the Club Room. Although Justin Yang (2015, Public Health & Primary Care) has submitted his thesis, it doesn't mean he's leaving Wolfson just yet. Justin, who hails from Vancouver, BC, has been an integral part of Wolfson for the last few years — serving as WCSA President, appearing as a member of the successful University Challenge team with countryman Eric Monkman, and coxing for the women's W1 boat. These days he is helping out in the Alumni & Development Office and looking for postdoc opportunities in Cambridge, Canada or beyond. ALUMNI & DEVELOPMENTMeet the Alumni TeamJane Reynolds has joined the Alumni & Development Office as Alumni Manager. She is setting up a new alumni portal, a project that has been part funded by a grant from the Universities Development Accelerator Fund, and developing our alumni programmes supported by Rob Grayston, Alumni Officer. Read more about Jane and Rob or, better yet, drop into College to meet them for a chat or say hi to them at the upcoming Alumni Reunion . New Double Scull for WCBCA huge thank you to alumnus and former WCBC rower Henry Rogers for the donation of a double scull to the Boat Club. Henry and his wife Stella, for whom the boat is named, recently visited Wolfson for the naming ceremony. WOLFSON AROUND THE WORLDNew York Get-togetherThanks to Wolfson alumni Michi Jakob for recently hosting members of our community at his rooftop party in New York where people shared stories and raised a glass to the College for Foundation Day. From left: Michi Jakob, Shangmuga Jayakumar, Mai and Nick Hartman, Mithran Tiruchelvam, and Collin Edouard (Collin is coming to Wolfson to do an MMus Choral Studies as a Gates Scholar, so we’ll be seeing — and hopefully hearing —much more of him in the near future.) CHINA Wolfson Fellow Dr Frank Tietze (@franktietze) has recently visited Beijing to research how Chinese organisations innovate in the field of synthetic biology, with a particular focus on advancing the bioeconomy as well as intellectual property and licensing. He facilitated an event in Beijing, and will also be visiting Shenzen.
