PNA HIGHLIGHTS & HAPPENINGS
“What I look forward to the most as a CSO is working closely with the Seattle community and connecting people with services and resources,” said Community Service Officer Kevin Hendrix. Community Service Officers are civilian employees of the Seattle Police Department who engage community, offer services, and support youth. Learn more about our local CSOs and their work in our new blog!
The safety of the community is always one of our top priorities. With that in mind, we feel it is best to be cautious and this year's Annual Meeting is now virtual only. This Sat, Jan. 29 from 10 am to 10:45 am, we invite you to sip a cup of coffee, grab breakfast, and tune in from home for our livestream Annual Meeting on YouTube! Join us to look back at our 2021 successes, explore our plans for
2022, and help elect new board members. To vote, log in to your Google account and comment in our live chat, or email us your vote.
The GSC is partnering with the University of Washington to find better ways to help seniors experiencing depression. We're seeking participants for a 9-week program based on research showing that increasing participation in pleasurable and rewarding activities can decrease depressive symptoms. Eligible participants will receive $130 over the course of the program. The study can be conducted in-person at the GSC or online.
Our friends at Yonder Cider are closing their garage-based Yonder Bar on Feb. 26 and it's not too late to reserve a seat and help say goodbye! Yonder Cider is very kindly donating all reservation fees to the PNA. Don't worry, Yonder Cider won't be far: they have a collaborative taproom with Bale Breaker Brewing in Ballard and their tasty cider is still available on draft and in cans at many PhinneyWood locations!
We are excited to partner with Girls on the Run to bring their inspiring after-school program to our community this spring. The program uses a fun curriculum that integrates running to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident. As one parent shared, “The relationship skills and confidence gains have transformed my daughter." Girls of all ability and activity levels welcome!
Kids in our Whittier Kids program recently studied clothing! They learned that some clothing has a tag attached with important info and that many fabrics are woven. To prepare for a tie dye t-shirt activity, they dripped and dabbed colors onto paper towels to make vivid patterns. Their art is beautiful and reminded us of a time not too far gone...
We love supporting local artists and are excited to showcase paintings by Susan Hamilton of the Emerald City Art Collective from Jan. 28 through March 31 in the Blue Building lobby. Susan grew up and continues to live in Washington, appreciating its flora, fauna, and landscapes. Stop by to admire her paintings and enjoy free coffee!
Since Groundhog Day and World Ukulele Day both occur on February 2, it makes perfect sense (probably) to combine them into one fantastic celebration! Enjoy a mini ukulele concert with Susan Howell, a Master teacher and an instructor at Dusty Strings, followed by a screening of the 1993 classic comedy movie Groundhog Day with appropriately-themed treats. Call 206.297.0875 to RSVP today!
Come learn about the Phinney Neighborhood Preschool Co-op's fantastic preschool programs for infants, toddlers, threes, and pre-k! Meet the teachers, mingle with current co-op families, learn about the curriculum, and explore the classrooms. Children are encouraged to attend!
Book Exchange
Sat, Feb. 19, 11 am - 2 pm. Phinney Center. Free.Trade your gently used books for some that are new to you! We'll accept five book genres: mystery, sci-fi, fantasy, kids' & YA, and cookbooks. Don’t have books to exchange or want to buy more than you're bringing in? Purchase paperbacks for $1 and hardbacks for $2.
We're also hosting a warm sock drive at the exchange, so please bring new socks for our Hot Meal Program diners.
On your marks, get set, go buy Bingo Karaoke tickets this Tues, 2/1 at 10 am! This quarterly party has been called "the hottest game in town" and we fully expect tickets to sell out FAST. Capacity is reduced and proof of vaccination and masks are required. All proceeds support the Greenwood Senior Center.
Join us for a screening of this classic 1920 film, part of Kino Lorber’s Pioneers of African-American Cinema collection. The plot features an African-American woman who goes North in an effort to raise money for a rural school in the Deep South for poor black children. Paul D. Miller, aka DJ Spooky, will provide music for this silent movie. The screening is presented by Scarecrow Video in partnership with our friends at UHeights. There will be an intro and post film discussion.
Enjoy ten tastes of local wines, appetizers, and music at our Wine Taste. Experience local wineries and shop our event wine store to find bottles from small wineries whose wine may not be readily available in Seattle. Proceeds from the wine store and admission tickets benefit our community-driven programs and activities.
