Have you seen a red-eared
slider turtle? The red-eared slider turtle is listed as ‘one of the world’s worst invasive alien species’. It originates from the USA but is considered an environmental pest in Australia because it competes with our native turtles for food, nesting areas and basking sites. If you see one, please take a photo, record its location and report details below.
Our plastic problemYear 10 students from Balgowlah Boys recently spent a day working with educators from our Coastal Environment Centre to find out more about the impact of microplastics on our oceans. After identifying and analysing microplastics at Collaroy Beach they recorded their data on AUSMAP. The microplastics particles will also be sent to Macquarie
University for further analysis.
Bees to the rescueLocal teacher Alex McGhan has been driving many 'green' projects at Mona Vale Public. She recently approached our staff at the Coastal Environment Centre for assistance in getting some native stingless bees for her school. Naturally we were happy to assist and helped by splitting our hive. Stingless bees are great pollinators and play such an important role in
maintaining the health of Australia’s unique bushland.
Toadlet talesThe red-crowned toadlet is a 2cm long frog found in Sydney and is listed as vulnerable. What is interesting about this frog is the male looks after the baby tadpoles for their first eight weeks inside a soft egg on dry land. After that the tadpole completes its growth in water.
